Senior Nicole Doyle one-hit Houston in a 3-0 complete game shutout
HOUSTON, March 30, 2019 – Senior Nicole Doyle one-hit Houston in USF’s 3-0 shutout for its first series win of conference play.
It was all zeros across the board until the top of the fourth inning when junior AnaMarie Bruni (Schwenksville, Pa.) hit an infield single. USF (25-14, 3-2) didn’t score in the fourth, but got its first runs on the board in the top of the fifth. Junior Brooke Hartman (Port Orange, Fla.) reached first on an error, and was out on a fielder’s choice that put junior Kelsey Lay (West Palm Beach, Fla.) on first. Junior outfielder Riley Gore (West Palm Beach, Fla.) smashed a homerun over the wall at centerfield for two RBI and a 2-0 lead.
Dole (Aurora, Ohio) no-hit the Cougars (24-11, 2-3) for five innings, retiring ten straight batters until Houston put down a double for its only hit of the game. Doyle improved to 7-10 in her third complete game and third shutout this season.
USF put up another run in the sixth when senior Macy Cook (Uniontown, Ohio) drew a walk, and freshman Megan Pierro (Lutz, Fla.) entered to pinch hit. Houston committed an error on a fielder’s choice by sophomore Bethaney Keen (Bradenton, Fla.) that gave Pierro a chance to score.
