Both Sharks Track Squads Finish Third at Second South Florida Challenge

MIRAMAR, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern men’s and women’s track and field teams competed Tuesday in their second competition of the 2021 season at the Ansin Sports Complex, with both teams earning third place among the field at the South Florida Challenge #2. The Sharks totaled six first-place finishes on the day.

FIELD EVENTS
Shark field events competitors produced four top finishes, split evenly between throws and jumps. In the men’s triple jump, Justin Jackson went 13.54m (44-5.25) for the win. In her first high jump of the year, Carly Rothert tied for first with a 1.40m leap (4-7). Meanwhile, in the throwing ring, Jaylynne Thomas notched a pair of career bests to win both the shot put (11.59m/38.25) and discus throw (34.79m/114-2).

In addition, Abdrrazek Azlag earned second in the men’s long jump at 6.26m (20-6.50), Rothert was second in the women’s javelin at 25.16m (82-6) and Eileen Platten finished third in both the women’s triple jump (9.78m/32-1.0) and long jump (4.35m/14-3.25). For her third top-four finish of the day, Rothert was also fourth in the triple jump at 9.50m (31-2.0). Spencer Ochko was third in both the men’s discus (37.97m/124-7) and shot put (10.13m/33-03.0).

RUNNING EVENTS
Fresh off the cross country course, freshmen Ivanova Yanes and Maya Espinosa shined for the Sharks. Yanes led Espinosa in a 1-2 finish of the 1500m, coming in at 5:00.31 and 5:01.81, respectively. Espinosa also claimed the top spot in the 800m with a time of 2:30.59, ahead of Ellyn Willse in second place. On the men’s side, Aaron Weimer claimed second place in the 1500m with a time of 4:20.69.

RELAY EVENTS
The meet featured one relay event, the 4x800m, and the Sharks women’s quartet of Yanes, Lauren BreskiLeah Marville and Taylar Sherman earned second place with a combined effort of 10:39.15.

UP NEXT
The Sharks are back at Ansin for the third time this year and the second time this week, returning Saturday for the South Florida Challenge Meet #3 on March 13.
