BASE | Owls Fall in Middle Game; Sunday’s Start Time Moved Up

3/2/2024 | Baseball | Box Score
BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic baseball dropped the middle game to Stonehill on Saturday afternoon by a 3-2 final. First pitch for the series finale on Sunday has been moved up to 11 a.m. to avoid potential weather late in the afternoon.
THE BEGINNING
The Owls drew first blood with two runs in the bottom of the first. A bases loaded single up the middle by Carter Brady made it 2-0.
THE TURNING POINT
On the other side, freshman starter Trey Beard cruised through the first three innings before hitting a speed bump in the fourth. A leadoff walk followed by an error, a double, and a wild pitch tied the game at two. A sacrifice fly then gave the Skyhawks their first lead of the series.
THE FINISH
After the opening inning, the Owl offense struggled to string hits together. It was still 3-2 entering the bottom of the ninth. Jalen DeBose led off with a single and Spencer Rich dropped down a bunt that wasn’t fielded in time. The Owls would eventually have two chances with runners at second and third and one out. But Andrew McKenna popped out to the shortstop in foul territory and John Schroeder stuck out on a 3-2 pitch. The Skyhawks held on to even the series.
QUOTABLE
Head coach John McCormack
“That was bad. We’ve had the same issue all week where we can’t get out of an inning and then we can’t put anything together offensively. Everyone wants to hit the ball out of the park instead of creating some offense in other ways. It’s disappointing. It really is.”
THE ARMS
Beard departed after four innings having allowed just one earned run on two hits.
Braden Ostrander and Danny Trehey combined to hold the Skyhawks scoreless for the final five innings.
Trehey struck out six in his three frames.
THE BATS
Rich and DeBose recorded three hits apiece.
The Owls left 12 on base.
WHAT’S NEXT
The Owls and Skyhawks will decide the series at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
