American Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Release – January 2

ON DECK IN THE AMERICAN

Conference action will continue as eight teams will look to earn their first conference win this season. East Carolina will play their first conference game of the season, hosting UTSA on Tuesday at 6 p.m. ET, while Rice will play their inaugural American Athletic Conference game on Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET when they host Wichita State.

WILSON MOVES PAST 400 CAREER ASSISTS

South Florida redshirt senior guard Aerial Wilson became the 13th player to dish out over 400 assists in American Athletic Conference history. She is currently in 12th place with 406 career assists. She became just the 5th Bull to reach the 400-assist milestone and currently has the 44th most assists among active players in the NCAA.

UAB, CHARLOTTE EARN FIRST WINS IN THE AMERICAN

UAB and Charlotte became the first of the new member institutions to earn wins as part of The American.  On Saturday, the Blazers defeated Florida Atlantic 65-53 in Boca Raton, while Charlotte earned a home win over North Texas 74-64.

BENEFITING FROM THE CHARITY STRIPE

North Texas has been aggressive getting to the basket this season, resulting in the 2nd most free throw attempts in the nation (28.2 per game). They make 18.5 free throws per game – the 3rd most in the NCAA. DesiRay Kernal has made 73 free throws on the season, the 5th most in the nation.

THE AMERICAN IN THE NET

As conference play begins, three American Athletic Conference teams find themselves in the Top 100 – East Carolina (81), North Texas (89) and Rice (97). SMU (107), Tulsa (108), South Florida (109), Charlotte (110) and Temple (110) are just outside the Top 100.
