American Athletic Conference Announces Men’s Basketball Weekly Awards

IRVING, Texas – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly men’s basketball honors for the third week of the regular season.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Alijah Martin, Jr., G, Florida Atlantic

Martin helped lead the Owls to the ESPN Events Invitational title and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player after averaging 18.3 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.0 assists wins over Butler, then-No. 12 Texas A&M and Virginia Tech.

FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK

PJ Haggerty, G, Tulsa

Haggerty picked up his second-straight weekly honor after averaging 18.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists in two games for the Golden Hurricane.

HONOR ROLL

Yaxel Lendeborg, Jr., F, UAB

Lendeborg averaged 14.0 points, 11.0 rebounds and 4.0 blocks as the Blazers picked up wins over Middle Tennessee and Furman.

David Jones, Sr., F, Memphis

Jones was named to the All-Tourney Team of the Battle 4 Atlantis after averaging 20.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.7 steals in three Tiger contests. The senior recorded 36 points and five steals against then-No. 20 Arkansas in the semifinals.

Zhuric Phelps, Jr., G, SMU

Phelps averaged 19.0 points, 6.3 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.0 steals as the Mustangs went 2-1 last week. The junior was named to the Fort Myers Tip-Off All-Tournament Team.

Kevin Cross, Sr., F, Tulane

Cross was named to the SoCal Challenge Surf Division All-Tournament Team averaging 19.0 points and 8.5 rebounds as the Green Wave split a pair of games.

Kenny Pohto, Jr., F, Wichita State

Pohto recorded 25 points, six rebounds and a season-high five assists in the Shockers’ lone game last week, a win over Norfolk State on Saturday.
