TAMPA, NOV. 4, 2019 – USF men’s basketball head coach Brian Gregory announced Monday that redshirt sophomore forward Alexis Yetna suffered a left knee injury Friday during practice and will miss the entire 2019-20 season.
“We feel terrible for Alexis because we know how hard he’s worked and how much he was looking forward to this season,” Gregory said. “He’s undoubtedly one of the top big men in the country and his production will be difficult to replace, but we have the utmost confidence in the group we have behind him and we all know Lex will be supporting and rooting his teammates on all season from the sideline. Knowing his character like we do, Alexis will come back stronger from this setback.”
Yetna led the American Athletic Conference in rebounding (9.6 rpg) and double-doubles (15) last season and was selected as the 2019 AAC Freshman of the Year. Last month, Yetna was tabbed to the preseason All-Conference Second Team in The American and was one of only 20 players in the NCAA named to the Karl Malone Award Watch List.
USF opens the regular season Tuesday at 8 p.m. against Arkansas-Pine Bluff at the Yuengling Center.

The USF men’s basketball team is led by head coach Brian Gregory. On March 22, 2017, Gregory was introduced as the 10th head coach in program history. He previously led programs at Georgia Tech (2011-16) and Dayton (2003-11). Gregory spent nearly a decade as an assistant coach under Michigan State’s Hall of Fame head coach Tom Izzo and helped the Spartans win the 2000 NCAA National Championship. Gregory owns nearly 250 career head coaching wins and six postseason appearances, including the 2010 NIT Championship. In his second season at the helm of the Bulls, Gregory led the team to the best win turnaround in the NCAA, the most single-season wins in school history and the 2019 College Basketball Invitational championship.
USF has retired three numbers in its 47-year history: Chucky Atkins (12), Charlie Bradley (30) and Radenko Dobras (31). The Bulls have earned three NCAA tournament bids, appeared in the NIT eight times and won the 2019 College Basketball Invitational.
