A Trio of Bulls Earn Weekly AAC Honors

Brown, Devenish-Meares and Ycaza recognized by the AAC for the second time in 2019.

TAMPA (Sept. 30, 2019) – The USF men’s soccer team had a trio of standouts earn weekly American Athletic Conference honors, the league announced on Monday. Javain Brown (Kinston, Jamaica) was named Defensive Player of the Week and Harrison Devenish-Meares (Sydney, Australia) was named Goalkeeper of the Week. Emilio Ycaza (St. Petersburg, Fla.) was named to the AAC honor roll. It is the second time this season that each player earned their respective honor.

The Bulls (5-2, 1-0 AAC) posted a 2-0 record last week with wins over North Florida (1-0) and against UConn (2-1) in the AAC opener. The Bulls are off to their best seven-match start since going 5-1-1 to start the 2008 and 2009 campaigns. During the 2007 season, USF started 6-1.

Brown contributed on both sides of the ball, helping USF to its second clean sheet of the season against the Ospreys. USF held North Florida to just five shots on the night, three in the first half and two in the second. Against the Huskies, Brown helped to shut down one of the top scorers in the conference, Jordan Hall, as he only got off three shots. Brown also stepped up on the offensive side, scoring his first goal of the season – and the game winner in the 81st minute.

Devenish-Meares logged three saves in 180 minutes of action last week. The senior keeper posted a clean sheet against North Florida, his second of the season and the fifth of his career, and made two crucial saves in the second half against UConn. He has been the mainstay in net for the Bulls, playing all 630 minutes and recording 17 saves on 23 shots on goal. He has a 0.86 goals against average.

Ycaza fired off three shots last week – all coming against UConn – including the match’s first goal in the 17th minute. Two of the three shots came on frame. He also made a bid for his second goal of the match, just missing as he sent the shot off the right post in the 64th minute from 5 yards out. On the year, Ycaza leads the team in scoring with six points (3g).

The Bulls return to the pitch on Tuesday at 7 p.m., when they welcome Florida Gulf Coast to Corbett Stadium.
