USF SOFTBALL: Bulls Drop Close Contest to No. 8 Florida

An error makes the difference in a 1-0 loss

GAINESVILLE, Fla., April 20, 2022 – The University of South Florida softball team nearly pulled off its second top 10 upset of the season but had its comeback attempt fall short in a 1-0 loss against No. 8 Florida. The Bulls had two runners in scoring position in the seventh, but a sliding catch in left field ended the game before a runner could cross.

Georgina Corrick (Sanford, Fla.) tossed a complete-game one hitter, while Vivian Ponn (Fort Myers, Fla.) led the Bulls on offense with two hits.

Pitchers dueled for the duration of the contest. Through five innings, the teams we limited to a combined three hits, with USF holding a 2-1 edge in the category.

Florida took the lead in the sixth. Skylar Wallace reached on a walk, then with two outs attempted to steal second, taking the base as the throw went into center field. Wallace used the opportunity to advance to third then scored as the throw to the plate was slightly off-line.

The unearned run was enough to take the game, giving Florida a 1-0 win in the midweek matchup.
