Benjamin Named to C-USA All-Freshman Team

DALLAS – UAB’s Jalen Benjamin has been named to the 2020 Conference USA All-Freshman team as announced by the league today.

Benjamin finished the regular season averaging 12.1 points per game while making a team-best 52 3-pointers.

A two-time Rookie of the Week, Benjamin has 18 double-figure scoring games this season. His career-high was a 29 point effort against Southern Miss when he was 9-of-18 from the field, including six 3-pointers. He also added six 3-pointers in the Blazers’ home victory against Middle Tennessee. 

Currently, Benjamin ranks fifth in the league with a .826 free throw percentage. He began the season by making 38 of his first 41 attempts for a .926 percentage. He knocked down 10-of-11 FT attempts in the Blazers’ win against a Duquesne team who was previously undefeated. 

“I’m happy for Jalen to be announced on the All-Rookie team,” said head coach Robert Ehsan. “He has had a great year for us so far and is an incredibly hard worker who is much deserving of the recognition.”

Next up for UAB (18-13, 9-9 C-USA) is the 2020 Conference USA Championship. The Blazers are a No. 7 seed and will face No. 10 seed UTSA (13-18, 7-11 C-USA) in the First Round of the tournament. The game will be on Wednesday, March 11 with an 8:30 p.m. tipoff time. The winner will face No. 2 seed WKU (20-10, 13-5 C-USA), who receives a first round bye, in the quarterfinal round on Thursday at 8:30 p.m.
