Zemberyova’s Goal in Double OT Lifts UAB to 2-1 Victory at Southern Miss

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Laura Zemberyova found the back of the net with 1:55 remaining in the 2nd overtime to give the UAB women’s soccer team a 2-1 victory over Southern Miss on Friday evening.

The Blazers (3-7-2, 2-2-0 C-USA) got on the board first when Jessica Wheeler’s corner kick found Asha Zuniga in the box. Zuniga’s header got past USM keeper Kendell Mindnich on the left side to put the Blazers ahead 1-0 in the 38th minute.

Southern Miss (6-3-1, 2-1-1 C-USA) got the equalizer in the 63rd minute on Blessing Kingsley’s goal.

The Blazers almost ended the contest in the 107th minute, but Carlyn Presley’s shot hit crossbar and bounced right into Mindnich’s arms.

Two minutes later, the Blazers were applying pressure. Lexxe Lipsey’s shot was blocked. A USM defender’s clearing attempt hit off Presley’s leg. The ball went to Zemberyova who blasted a shot past Mindnich on the left side for the game-winner.

UAB outshot Southern Miss 14-to-5 with Zemberyova, Lipsey and Stella Kiss recording three apiece. Anika Toth made three saves to record her third victory of the year.

Up next, the Blazers remain on the road facing Rice on Oct. 8. UAB returns home on Oct. 15 to host North Texas for the annual Bark in the Park night.
