WSOC | Owls Tally Another Shut Out on the Season

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic’s women’s soccer team finished their match against Rice in a 0-0 draw on a very windy Thursday evening.

The Owls improve to 2-8-4, 1-3-2 AAC after facing Rice on Thursday evening. This marked the second time these two teams have faced each other since joining the American Athletic Conference. Florida Atlantic moves to 4-4-1 against Rice in program history. Florida Atlantic has added another shutout to the sheet for the season.

The starting lineup looked a little different for the Owls tonight as freshman forward Sutton Markee recorded her first start of her collegiate career. Senior Sofia Voldby made her way back into the starting XI tonight to record her tenth start of the year. Florida Atlantic’s defense held Rice to only five shots in the first half with no goals to end the first 45 minutes of the match. By the end of the first half, goalkeeper and captain Lexi Gonzalez recorded four saves.

The Owls came out in the second half and recorded seven shots to end the night with a total of nine. Gonzalez now totals 35 saves on the season and improves her career total to 138 saves. With another shutout added to the sheet, Gonzalez jumps to No. 5 in the record book with 13 shutouts in her career. After tonight’s performance, she recorded a season-high of seven saves in a match. The Owls totaled nine shots on the night.
