FRISCO, Texas – Conference USA announced its 2022-23 women’s basketball postseason awards on Tuesday afternoon. Margaret Whitley was named to the Second Team and Denim DeShields to the All-Freshman team.
Whitley, a graduate student, finished the regular season averaging 11.1 points per game. Her 90.8 free throw percentage is first in the league and eighth nationally. She hit 36.1% of her 3-point attempts, which is second in C-USA and her average of 2.2 3-pointers per game ranks third league wide.
This is Whitley’s second C-USA postseason award. She was named Second Team All-Conference in 2021.
“Marge has represented our program on and off the court for the last five years,” said head coach Randy Norton. “She has been an outstanding leader for our team. On the court she has been extremely consistent for us all season long.”
DeShields, a three-time C-USA Freshman of the Week, leads the Blazers and is 10th in C-USA in scoring with averaging 12.8 points per game. She had 17 double-figure scoring games, five scoring 20-points or more. Her career-high of 36 points against FIU was the fifth-highest scoring game in C-USA.
Her 124 assists and 4.3 assists per game both rank second in the league. DeShields had a career-high 11 assists at Charlotte which was the second-most in C-USA this season.
“Denim is very deserving of this award,” added Norton. “We are very excited about her and our team as her best basketball is in front of her.”
UAB (13-16) is the No. 10 seed and faces No. 7 seed North Texas (11-19) on Wednesday in the First Round of the 2023 Conference USA Championship in Frisco Texas. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. (CT).
