WBB: UAB Defeats Shorter 96-53 in an Exhibition Game

BIRMINGHAM – Freshman Denim DeShields scored 14 points and added a game-high eight assists as the UAB women’s basketball team defeated Shorter 96-53 in an exhibition game at Bartow Arena on Wednesday night.


Desiree Ware scored a team-high 16 points while Lyndsey Robson and Maddie Walsh added 14 points apiece. Robson led the team with six rebounds.

Shorter’s Derrica McCall scored a game-high 23 points.


The Blazers, who led from start-to-finish, were up 11-10 with 3:02 left in the 1st quarter before ending on a 10-3 run to take a 21-13 advantage after the first 10 minutes.

An early 11-0 run in the 2nd quarter made the score 32-15 at the 5:32 mark. The Blazers’ first 20+ lead came after a pair of Destinee McGhee free throws made the score 46-25 just before halftime.

UAB made it to the half century mark on a DeShields jumper early in the 3rd quarter that made the score 50-27.

The Blazers ended the game on a 14-0 run, started by Ware scoring the first seven points. Molly Moffitt’s layup with 1:13 remaining closed out the scoring.

As a team, UAB shot 54.7% (35-64) and scored 30 points off of 27 Hawks turnovers. Half of the Blazers’ points (48) came in the paint.


Up next is the regular season opener on Nov. 7 at noon against Auburn Montgomery.
