WBB | Owls Earn Senior Day Win Against Charlotte

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic Owls (11-17, 6-11 AAC) closed out their 2023-24 regular season slate on Sunday, completing the season sweep against the Charlotte 49ers (16-13, 9-8 AAC) with a 56-47 win on Senior Day.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Charlotte took the early lead but the Owls tied up the game at 4-4 before taking their first lead, 6-4, after back-to-back-to-back baskets from Dyllan Hanna. The 49ers tied things up at 6-6, but the Owls closed the opening period on a 7-0 run to take a 13-6 lead.
Aniya Hubbard extended the Owls run to 9-0, 15-6, to open the second. The 49ers answered back over the following four minutes of clock, producing a 14-6 run to cut the Owls’ lead to one, 21-20. The Owls scored seven unanswered of jumpers from Janeta Rozentale and Hubbard, and a 3-pointer from Rozentale, extending their lead back to eight, 28-20, however Charlotte responded with a 7-0 run of their own to close out the half, 28-27.
Rozentale hit her second 3-pointer of the day to open the third, 31-27, but a scoring drought for the Owls allowed the 49ers to tie things up at 31 at the 6:05-minute mark. Both teams fell into a scoring drought over the following three minutes of clock, before the Owls broke the 31-31 stalemate with a triple from Hubbard, 34-31. The 49ers took the lead at 37-36, however Devyn Scott scored on an and-1 to put the Owls back in front 39-37 to close out the third.
Hanna and Hubbard scored four unanswered for the Owls to extend the lead back to six, 43-37. The 49ers got back within three at 43-40, but a triple from Allie Tylka sparked a 9-1 Owls’ run to extend the lead to double figures, 52-41, with 2:33 to play. The 49ers tried to rally, outscoring the Owls 6-4 to close out the contest, but it was too little too late as the Owls’ claimed the 56-47 win.

“Really excited and so glad to get a win on senior day. We have a terrific group of seniors and they deserve to go out on a win against a really good Charlotte Team. But I’m just so proud of this group and glad their last memory on this floor was with a win before we go into the next regular season game.”
NOTES AND TEAM STATS
The Owls completed their season sweep against Charlotte with Sunday’s 56-47 win.Janeta Rozentale and Aniya Hubbard led the Owls in the win.
Rozentale scored a team-high 14 points, shooting 43 percent (6-of-14) from the field and 40 percent (2-of-5) from beyond the arc, while also adding a team-leading nine boards, a team-high two blocks, two assists, and two steals.
Hubbard also finished in double figures with a team second-best 13 points, shooting 71 percent (5-of-7) from the field and 67 percent (2-of-3) from 3-point range, in addition to pulling down three boards, dishing out three assists, and grabbing two steals.
Devyn Scott finished with a team-high five assists.
Florida Atlantic outscored Charlotte 13-6 in the first, 11-10 in the third, and 17-10 in the fourth.
The Owls also outshot the 49ers 43.1 percent to 31.6 percent from the field.
Florida Atlantic also held advantages in points in the paint, 28-20, points off turnovers, 19-12, bench points, 29-13, and fast break points, 8-3.

The Owls will wrap up their regular season on Wednesday as they head to Philadelphia for their regular season finale against the Temple Owls. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. inside the Liacouras Center.
