WBB: Late Comeback Falls Short as UAB Falls to LA Tech 61-55

Late Comeback Falls Short as UAB Falls to LA Tech 61-55

BIRMINGHAM – UAB cut a 12-point 4th quarter deficit down to three but could not get any closer as LA Tech came away with a 61-55 victory on Saturday afternoon.

Desiree Ware scored 12 points off the bench for the Blazers (9-7, 1-6 C-USA). Margaret Whitley added 11 points and six rebounds for the Blazers.

Keiunna Walker scored a game-high 26 points for the Lady Techsters (11-6, 4-3 C-USA). Amaya Brannon pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.

The 1st quarter was back-and-forth as well as low-scoring. Two ties and seven lead changes occurred as LA Tech was up 13-12 at the end of the first 10 minutes of play. Denim DeShields opened up the 2nd quarter with a basket, giving UAB its final lead of the contest at 14-13. It would stay a two-possession game heading into halftime at 28-23.

LA Tech’s first double-digit lead came after a Lottie Sant 3-point at 7:49 of the 4th quarter made the score 51-41. The lead would get to 12 points after a pair of Walker free throws at 2:16. The Blazers answered with an 10-1 run which included eight points from Whitley in a 1:51 span. Her layup with 32 seconds was the final score for UAB as Walker hit three free throws in the final 23 seconds to seal the game.

Despite being down two forwards, the Blazers were only a -3 on the boards and assisted on 10 of their 18 field goals.

“I proud of this team, they fought to the very end,” said head coach Randy Norton. “Desiree Ware and Sara Bershers both came off the bench and really contributed. However, when you shoot 28% from the field and 27% from 3-point range, it makes it hard to win.”

The Blazers remain at home for a Monday night contest against Middle Tennessee (13-2, 6-0). The Blue Raiders have won 11 straight game dating back to Nov. 26.
