WBB: Last Minute Comeback Lifts UAB Over UTSA 67-64 on Senior Day

BIRMINGHAM – Maddie Walsh’s 3-pointer with 57.2 seconds remaining in regulation put UAB ahead for good in its 67-64 victory over UTSA on Senior Day at Bartow Arena.

The Blazers (12-14, 4-13 C-USA) were led by Emily Klaczek’s 16 points off the bench. Walsh added 12 and both Margaret Whitley and Destinee McGhee scored 11 for UAB.

The Roadrunners (7-18, 5-11 C-USA) were led by Jordyn Jenkins with a game-high 19 points.

UTSA built a nine point lead late in the 1st quarter before Denim DeShields’ last second layup made the score 18-11. An 11-2 Blazers run early in the 2nd quarter tied the game at 22-22. The contest would remain a two-possession game the rest of the way, with 10 lead changes and four ties.

Desiree Ware’s 3-pointer at 8:43 of the 4th quarter gave UAB its largest lead of the game at 58-52. However, UTSA responded with a 10-0 run to take a 62-58 advantage. After a pair of McGhee free throws 3:10 left made the score 62-60, neither team scored until Walsh’s 3-pointer. McGhee followed with a layup to give the Blazers a 65-62 lead with 15.0 seconds remaining. The Roadrunners scored on their ensuing possession to get within a point with 10.3 seconds to go, but Whitley made both of her free throws with 8.3 seconds remaining. Kyra White’s 3-pointer at the buzzer did not fall.

“I thought the team’s resilience was outstanding today,” said head coach Randy Norton. “It was an emotional day because it was Senior Day and Pink Day. I’m really happy how everybody stepped up at the end.”

Prior to the game, the senior class of Whitley, Lyndsey Robson, Maria Roters, Audrey Jordan and Jasmine Gracie were honored.

The Blazers play their final road game of the season at Rice on Feb. 23 before returning home to close out the regular season against WKU on Feb. 25 and Charlotte on March 4.
