WBB: Blazers Close Out Homestand With Southern Miss

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB women’s basketball team will play its final regular season home contest on Thursday evening when they host Southern Miss at Bartow Arena. Tipoff is at 6 p.m.
 
UAB LATELY
UAB (15-12, 8-8 C-USA) is currently in fourth place in the West Division, half a game behind Southern Miss and North Texas for second place. The Blazers are coming off a weekend Texas home sweep, 57-50 over UTSA and 65-49 over UTEP.
 
SOUTHERN MISS LATELY
Southern Miss (16-10, 8-7 C-USA) is tied for second place with North Texas, currently half a game behind LA Tech for West Division first place. The Golden Eagles have dropped their last two games, an 86-79 setback to UTEP and a 51-46 loss to Rice.
 
UAB AND SOUTHERN MISS HISTORY     
Southern Miss is UAB’s most played opponent in program history, as the teams have met 68 times. Each of UAB’s six head coaches had competed against Southern Miss beginning in 1979 with Fran Braash. The series has been played in five venues and in three different states. USM leads the series 40-28. UAB leads 15-14 at Bartow Arena. Southern Miss scored the most points against UAB in program history when they poured in 117 on Feb. 4, 1984. In that same game, the then-Lady Blazers scored 103, which was the third most in program history at the time. Of the 68 games, 37 of those have been decided by 10-or fewer points.
 
LAST TIME AGAINST SOUTHERN MISS
Margaret Whitley scored a then season-high 21 points and Maria Roters recorded a double-double of 14 points and a career-high 13 rebounds in UAB’s 68-61 victory on Feb. 10, 2022.
 
COMMON OPPONENTS
UAB and Southern Miss have 13 common opponents this season. Both the Blazers and Golden Eagles have played Samford, Mississippi Valley State and Arkansas Pine Bluff in nonconference action.
 
 TOP OF THE CHARTS         
Weathersby is sixth in the NCAA with 19 double-doubles, 22nd in FG percentage (55.8%), 11th with 4.2 offensive rebounds per game, 15th with 11.3 rebounds per game and 12th with 302 total rebounds. She’s second in the league in blocks per game and total blocks (1.96/53) and is third in field goals made (159).
 
GREAT 28     
Both Weathersby (Chicago State/Chattanooga) and Caitlynn Daniels (Mississippi Valley State) each have a 28-point game under their belts this year.
 
WORLD CLASS KLACZEK
Emily Klaczek set a career-high with 26 points in UAB’s 86-70 win over WKU on Jan. 27. She scored 16 points in the 2nd quarter, going 5-for-5 from the field, 4-of-4 from 3-point range and a pair of foul shots.
 
EIGHT IS ENOUGH  
In Daniels career day against MVSU, she drained eight 3-pointers. This is the most in C-USA this season and tied for the 11th most in the NCAA this season.
