VB: Hazan, Andrade Have Career Night in South Florida’s Loss to Georgia Tech

TAMPA, August 25, 2023 – Sophomore outside hitter Buse Hazan (Istanbul, Turkey) set two career highs while Maria Clara Andrade (São Paulo, Brazil) matched a career-high in the University of South Florida’s 3-0 (25-23, 25-13, 25-12) loss to the No. 20 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Friday night.

Hazan set a career-high of seven kills and three service aces, while Andrade matched a career-high three service aces for the third time in her career.

The first point of the Bull’s 2023 season was scored due to Georgia Tech’s early season jitters that caused a foul before the first serve. Hazan scored the first official point of the match and by the end of the first set, she set a new career high. From there, it was the international trio of Hazan, Andrade, and Tizi Puljiz (Resistencia, Argentina) who led the way for the Bulls, each contributing four points to the final set score.

South Florida continued to dominate the first set, gaining a lead of five points, 14-9. The Yellow Jackets fought back and tied the set at 21. Hazan and Amanda DeWitt (Jupiter) scored the Bull’s final two points of the set with a kill each.

In the second set, the Bulls went on a 5-1 run, three of the points coming from Hazan. Andrade and Hazan continued to lead the Bulls, scoring a combined 14 points in the last two sets.

Newcomers Lia Schneider (St Charles, Illinois) and Caroline Dykes (Flower Mound, Texas) performed well in their first match in the Green and Gold. Schneider led the match with 14 total digs, while Dykes was one dig shy of her 30th career double-double.
