USF’s Meenakshisundaram, Stone Named WGCA All-American Scholars

Freshman standout Ramya Meenakshisundaram and senior Sophie Stone received prestigious WGCA honors after helping the Bulls continue the uprising of the USF women’s golf program in 2018-19.

TAMPA, JULY 8, 2019 – USF’s Ramya Meenakshisundaram and Sophie Stone have been honored as Women’s Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) All-American Scholars for the 2018-19 season.

The WGCA released its full All-American Scholar Team on Monday and the criteria for selection are some of the most stringent in all of college athletics. Requirements included a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.50.

”Ramya and Sophie are outstanding representatives for embodying what we are all about as a department – winning in the classroom, winning on the course, and winning in the community,” head coach Erika Brennan said. “We are proud of their efforts for earning a cumulative 3.5 or higher GPA and for leading the charge with our academic pursuits.  This is a wonderful honor for two very deserving young women.”

Meenakshisundaram and Stone each were members of the USF Athletics Honor Roll for the fall 2018 and spring 2019 semesters. As a program, USF women’s golf received a Public Recognition Award from the NCAA this spring for earning perfect multi-year APR score of 1,000 for the sixth straight year and ninth time overall to rank among the top 10 percent nationally in APR performance in its respective sport.

Aside from shining in the classroom, Meenakshisundaram capped off her fantastic freshman season by earning a spot on The American’s all-conference team. The standout from Jacksonville, Fla., set program season records for scoring average (73.0) and par-4 scoring average (4.1066) in addition to matching the school’s season record for rounds of par or better (12). Meenakshisundaram also tied USF’s low 54-hole total with an 8-under 208 at the Kiawah Island Spring Classic and shot a career best 4-under 68 to earn a share of medalist honors at the Florida Challenge on Jan. 28.

Stone received her marketing degree from USF in spring 2019 after completing her second season with the Bulls. The Oxford, England native tied for 19th place at the Florida Challenge to help USF capture its first tournament title since April 11, 2017. The senior also was in the lineup for the Bulls’ second tournament title victory of the season at the John Kirk Panther Intercollegiate on April 22 and competed in 22 of the program’s 28 total rounds in 2018-19.
