USF’s Maria Alvarez Tabbed AAC ROW; Bethy Mununga Named to Honor Roll

The Bulls are recognized by The America for the second-straight week.

TAMPA (Nov. 18, 2019) – University of South Florida women’s basketball standout Maria Alvarez (Miami, Fla.) was named the American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week and Bethy Mununga (Zellik, Belgium) was named to the AAC Honor Roll when the league announced its weekly awards on Monday. It marks the second-straight week a USF player was recognized, following Enna Pehadzic (Horsens, Denmark) being tabbed The American Player of the Week on Nov. 11.

Alvarez continues her solid play for the USF, while helping to lead the Bulls to their second 2-0 week this season, and a 4-0 overall record, with victories over Howard (82-53) on Nov. 12 and VCU (77-55) on Nov. 15. The freshman guard averaged 15.5 points per game while shooting 11-for-18 (61.1 percent) from the field and 7-of-13 (53.8 percent) from behind the three-point arc. She also averaged 3.5 assists, 2.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game during the week. Alvarez poured in a career-high 20 points in USF’s win over VCU to go along with three assists, two steals and a rebound. She also had a career-high four rebounds in addition to her 11 points against Howard.

Mununga averaged a double-double with 14 points and 11.5 rebounds per game. She had career highs of 14 points, in both games, and also grabbed 11 rebounds against Howard and a career-high tying 12 rebounds in the win over VCU. Of her 21 total rebounds, 13 came on the offensive glass. In addition, she shot 76.0 percent (12-for-16) from the field in the two games and averaged 1.5 steals, 1.0 assists and 1.0 blocks per contest.

The Bulls, who on Monday moved up three spots to No. 22 in this week’s Associated Press Top 25 poll, look to get their fifth straight win when they face defending NCAA Champion, and No. 2 -ranked, Baylor in Waco, Texas on Tuesday. Tipoff is at 8 p.m. ET.
