USF Women’s Hoops Announces 2022-23 AAC Slate

Home-and-home games with War on I-4 rival Central Florida and four nationally televised games highlight schedule.

TAMPA (Sept. 21, 2022) – Entering his 23rd season as head coach of the University of South Florida women’s basketball program, Jose Fernandez announced the Bulls’ American Athletic Conference (AAC) schedule on Wednesday for the 2022-23 season, presented by Tampa General Hospital. The schedule is highlighted by four of the league’s six nationally televised games – three on ESPNU and one on ESPN2 – and home-and-home dates with rival Central Florida in the final conference edition of the War on I-4.

Looking for their second American Athletic Conference title in the last three seasons, and coming off their 10th 20-win season and eighth NCAA Tournament appearance in program history, the Bulls will open conference play with three of their first five games in the friendly confines of the Yuengling Center.

South Florida closes out the 2022 calendar year and opens conference play in New Orleans where the Bulls will face Tulane on Sat., Dec. 31 in a New Year’s Eve matchup. USF returns to Tampa to butt heads with Temple (5 p.m., ESPNU) on Tues., Jan. 3 for the Bulls’ AAC home-opener. After a trip to America’s Heartland to face Wichita State on Sat., Jan. 7, South Florida will close out their first five conference games with back-to-back home tilts against Memphis (7 p.m.) on Wed., Jan. 11 and Tulane (7 p.m.) on Sat., Jan. 14.

Three of USF’s next five games will be played on the road, starting at Houston on Wed., Jan. 18. Following the meeting with the Cougars, the Bulls will welcome Central Florida (2 p.m., ESPNU) to the Yuengling Center for the final time as a member of The American on Sun., Jan. 22, the first of two meetings with the Knights. The Green and Gold then hit the road for two straight at Tulsa (ESPNU) on Wed., Jan. 25 and at Memphis on Sat., Jan. 28, before closing out the month at home against East Carolina (7 p.m.) on Tues., Jan. 31.   

South Florida will close the league slate with the benefit of a favorable schedule with three of the next five at home. The Bulls open February at SMU on Sat., Feb. 4 and then face Houston (2 p.m., ESPN2) in the Yuengling Center on Sun., Feb. 12. South Florida travels east to Orlando for the second meeting in the War on I-4 against Central Florida, and the final regular season meeting as conference rivals, on Wed., Feb. 15. 

The Bulls close out the stretch with their final two home games of the regular season against SMU (5 p.m.) on Sat., Feb. 18 and Tulsa (7 p.m.) on Wed., Feb. 22. South Florida’s regular-season finale will be at Cincinnati on Wed., March 1.

For the third straight season, the American Athletic Conference Tournament will take place at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas, from March 6-9.

Last season, South Florida posted a 24-9 overall record and a 12-3 mark in the American Athletic Conference, capping off the season with its eighth NCAA Tournament appearance, and its seventh trip to the Big Dance in the last 10 years. 

Included in their 24 wins were victories over No. 9 Oregon, 71-62 and a thrilling 57-54 win over defending national champion and No. 7-ranked Stanford.

All home games and conference games not televised nationally will be televised on ESPN+.

South Florida recorded its 10th 20-win season during the 2021-22 campaign while playing in its sixth American Athletic Conference championship game in its nine years in the conference. The Bulls achieved their highest national ranking of the season when it checked in at No. 13 in the Nov. 30 Associated Press Top 25 Poll, and advanced to their seventh NCAA Tournament appearance in the last nine years.

USF has made 17 postseason tournament appearances and had eight NCAA Tournament berths in head coach Jose Fernandez’s 22 seasons. The all-time winningest coach in program history, Fernandez has guided USF to 10 20-win seasons, two WNIT final four appearances, the 2009 WNIT championship, and has won over 400 career games. Fernandez was named a finalist for the WBCA and semifinalist for the Naismith National Coach of the Year Awards. He was also tabbed the 2021 American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year at the conclusion of the 2020-21 campaign.

In 2021-22, the Bulls had three players recognized by The American for impressive seasons, including Elena Tsineke (All-Conference First Team), Bethy Mununga (All-Conference Second Team) and Dulcy Fankam Mendjiadeu (All-Conference Second Team).

In addition, Tsineke and Mununga were named to the American Athletic Conference All-Tournament Team.
