USF Women’s Basketball Standouts Dulcy Fankam Mendjiadeu and Carla Brito Earn American Athletic Conference Weekly Honors

Fankam Mendjiadeu was named AAC Player of the Week and Brito took Freshman of the Week honors. 

TAMPA (Nov. 14, 2022) – The University of South Florida women’s basketball standouts Dulcy Fankam Mendjiadeu and Carla Brito were recognized by the American Athletic Conference as this season’s first weekly award winners, the league announced on Monday. Fankam Mendjiadeu was named the AAC Player of the Week, while Brito was tabbed Freshman of the Week.

Fankam Mendjiadeu averaged 21.0 points and grabbed nine rebounds per game in the Bulls’ first three contests of the season, and shot a remarkable 73.5 percent from the field (25-for-34) and 68.4 percent (13-for-19) from the line. Out of her 27 rebounds to start the season, 10 came on the offensive glass.

She opened the season with a 12-point, 10-rebound performance against Morehead State on Nov. 7 and then followed that up with two back-to-back 20- point outings. Fankam Mendjiadeu poured in a career-high 26 points while scoring her 1,000th career point (between Memphis and South Florida) against Florida A&M on Nov. 11 and followed that up with a 25-point, 10-rebound afternoon against Jacksonville on Nov. 13.

Brito averaged 10.7 points and 6.3 rebounds per game to start the season and shot 70.0 percent (14-for-20) from the field and 50.0 percent (2-for-4) from behind the arc, getting the starting nod in all three games. In addition, she handed out 1.7 assists and 1.3 steals per contest.

Brito scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds in her collegiate debut against Morehead State while shooting 75.0 percent (6-for-8) from the field. She then shot 83.3 percent (5-for-6) from the floor en route to 11 points and six boards against Florida A&M.

South Florida returns to the Yuengling Center on Wednesday night when it hosts Alabama at 7 p.m.

South Florida recorded its 10th 20-win season during the 2021-22 campaign while playing in its sixth American Athletic Conference championship game in its nine years in the conference. The Bulls achieved their highest national ranking of the season when it checked in at No. 13 in the Nov. 30 Associated Press Top 25 Poll, and advanced to their seventh NCAA Tournament appearance in the last nine years.

USF has made 17 postseason tournament appearances and had eight NCAA Tournament berths in head coach Jose Fernandez’s 22 seasons. The all-time winningest coach in program history, Fernandez has guided USF to 10 20-win seasons, two WNIT final four appearances, the 2009 WNIT championship, and has won over 400 career games. Fernandez was named a finalist for the WBCA and semifinalist for the Naismith National Coach of the Year Awards. He was also tabbed the 2021 American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year at the conclusion of the 2020-21 campaign.

In 2021-22, the Bulls had three players recognized by The American for impressive seasons, including Elena Tsineke (All-Conference First Team), Bethy Mununga (All-Conference Second Team) and Dulcy Fankam Mendjiadeu (All-Conference Second Team).

In addition, Tsineke and Mununga were named to the American Athletic Conference All-Tournament Team.
