USF WGolf Signs Portugal’s Leonor Medeiros

Signee Leonor Medeiros has won numerous national championships and major events. The golf prodigy has represented Portugal on youth national teams since 2013, when she was just 10 years old.

TAMPA, NOV. 13, 2020
 – “The Uprising” of the USF women’s golf program continued with the addition of more top-level talent from around the globe as Portugal’s Leonor Medeiros signed a National Letter of Intent with the Bulls on Friday.

Currently No. 557 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, Medeiros has won several national and international youth championships in her highly successful career that includes at least 15 individual victories at prestigious tournaments. She currently sports a 73.2 scoring average through 34 tournament rounds this year.

Medeiros is a longtime national youth team member who first competed for Portugal as a 10-year-old in a match against Hungary’s under-14 team in 2013. Medeiros has represented her country in more than 20 events, including three in Spain last year along with tournaments in Germany and Prague in 2019.

“Leonor stood out in the recruiting process from Day One. She is focused on excelling with her golf game and has shown she is a force on the international stage this year,” head coach Erika Brennan said. “She is a workhorse and will thrive in a team environment. We are amped that she is the next great Bull!”

Medeiros, who lives in the town of Palmela, was victorious at the 2020 Portuguese Golf Federation Cup and carded a 6-under total score to also win at West Cliffs. The Federation Circuit victory was posted a month after she set a personal 18-hole record with an 8-under 65 this August.

Last year, Medeiros won the national under-16 championship after capturing the national under-14 crown in consecutive years (2016-17). Medeiros’ 2019 feats also included becoming Absolute National Champion and placing fifth at the European Under-16 Championship.

At the age of only 11, Medieros won her first national championship at the under-12 level in 2014. Other notable victories among many in her career came at the 2017 Austrian International Youth Championship, the 2018 Portuguese Golf Federation Cashback World Circuit Ranking and Oceanico World Kids Golf from 2013-16.

“Leonor really caught our attention in the recruiting process from Day One. You can hear the competitiveness and willingness to be coachable and improve on her skills every time we talked to her,” assistant coach Dalton Stevens said. “She is one who has a wealth of team competitions competing for her national team and we are excited to see that shine here at USF. Leonor will work extremely hard and we know that her best golf is still ahead of her. We are excited to officially welcome Leonor to our Bulls family!”

Medeiros will be joined at USF by recent signee Juliana Camargo, who is originally from Bogota, Colombia and is the sixth-ranked Class of 2021 recruit in the state of Florida.  Together, the incoming freshmen will look to help the Bulls continue on their upward trajectory in recent years. USF has won three tournament titles since spring 2019 after becoming the second-fastest rising program in the nation by the end of the 2018-19 campaign.

“I chose USF for several reasons,” said Medeiros, an aspiring golf pro. “The coaches were fantastic. They showed a great desire to have me on the team and the ambition to build a great team to the top in the coming years.”
