USF Walks Off With Win in 11th Inning

Carmine Lane delivers the Bulls’ first win of the season, a 3-2 decision against Marist.

TAMPA (Feb. 15, 2020) – Freshman Carmine Lane’s clutch single in the 11th inning helped USF walk off with its first win of the season on Saturday night.

Head coach Billy Mohl’s Bulls (1-1) scored two runs in the bottom of the 11th inning to rally past Marist, 3-2, at USF Baseball Stadium.

Right-hander Jack Jasiak (Spring Hill, Fla.) was solid in his first start on the mound as a Bull. Jasiak held the Red Foxes scoreless through five frames before allowing one run and finished with nine strikeouts in seven innings.

Marist (1-1) got on the board first in the top of the sixth inning when Robbie Armitage hit an RBI double down the left field line.

Julio Cortez (Weston, Fla.) came up big for the Bulls in the bottom of the seventh, tying the game with a pinch-hit RBI single, scoring Dylan Buck (Lakewood Ranch, Fla.).

Trailing 2-1 in the 11th inning, the no-quit Bulls delivered. Buck singled down the right field line to drive in the tying run. Nick Gonzalez (Tampa) moved Buck into scoring position with a single to right. With runners at the corners, Mohl called on Lane (Lake Placid, Fla.) to pinch hit and the decision paid off with Lane driving a single to right-center.

The game was initially a pitcher’s duel with both starters tossing seven innings of work. Nick Davila (Hialeah, Fla.) picked up the win by strikeout out five and allowing one hit in three innings of relief.

Quotable

Coach Billy Mohl on the Bulls’ dramatic win:

“I was really happy with Jack Jasiak. That was an unbelievable start for a freshman making his first collegiate start; he gave us seven strong innings. The bullpen was good once again, allowing only one free pass today, after we had two yesterday. The pitchers are doing their job, we just have to get something going offensively. At the end, Julio Cortez gets a pinch hit off the bench and delivers to tie the game and Carmine Lane with the big knock to win it.”
