USF Volleyball: Volleyball Closes Out Four-Match Road Stand with Pair of Matches at Temple

TAMPA, November 1, 2023 – The University of South Florida volleyball team (13-10, 7-5 AAC) closes out its four-match road stand with a pair of matches against Temple this Thursday and Friday in Philadelphia.  

South Florida traveled west for a pair of matches against the Tulsa Golden Hurricane and the SMU Mustangs. In the Bull’s loss at Tulsa, Marta Cvitkovic (Rijeka, Croatia) recorded her 1,000th career kill. It came in the third set to tie the set at four. Maria Clara Andrade (Sau Paulo, Brazil) finished the weekend with 28 kills, averaging 4.67 per set. 

As a team, the Bulls are ranked in the top 100 in the nation in five categories: 47th in assists per set (12.47), 60th in aces per set (1.76), 70th in kills per set (13.16), 83rd in team service aces (146), and 84th in hitting percentage (0.235). 

Individually, Buse Hazan (Istanbul, Turkey) is ranked in the top 100 in four categories: 48th in kills per set (3.90), 49th in points per set (4.44), 86th in points (355.5), and 86th in total kills (312).

Scouting the opponent:  

  • Temple is coming off a pair of losses against North Texas and Rice. 
  • Taylor Davenport continues to lead the Owls in kills. She has 317 kills on the season so far, averaging 3.52 kills per set. 
  • Chelci Banks leads the team with 88 blocks on the season. She is averaging 0.98 blocks per set.

Head coach Jolene Shepardson enters her fourth season at the helm of her alma mater in 2023. Named head coach on Jan. 8, 2020, Shepardson led the Bulls’ program to its last conference championship and NCAA tournament appearance as a student-athlete in 2002. USF made its last postseason appearance in 2018, posting 20 wins and appearing in the NIVC. USF Volleyball has made seven NCAA Tournament appearances and won 12 conference titles since its inception in 1972. The Bulls play in The Corral (1,000), adjacent to the Yuengling Center on the USF campus.
