USF Volleyball: South Florida Falls at SMU

DALLAS, TX, October 29, 2023 – The University of South Florida volleyball team (13-10, 7-5 AAC) fell to the SMU Mustangs (18-6, 12-1 AAC) on Sunday afternoon.  

The Bulls fell with scores of 19-25, 17-25, and 10-25. 

Maria Clara Andrade (Sau Paulo, Brazil) led the Bulls with 14 kills and seven digs. Lia Schneider (St. Charles, Ill.), Miya Thomas (Gainesville), and Buse Hazan (Istanbul, Turkey) finished with five digs each. Niki Khoshatefeh (Temecula, Calif) led the Bulls with a .286 hitting percentage.  

South Florida got off to a slow start, falling behind 18-9. SMU had set point but the Bulls fought and went on a 6-0 run to cut the lead to five points. SMU called a timeout and scored the final point needed to take a 1-0 lead in the match.  

The Bulls and Mustangs continued to fight early in the second match, tying seven times before either team reached 10 points. SMU went on a late run to distance them from the Bulls. South Florida answered with a late run, but SMU took a two-set lead.  

The Mustangs cruised through the final set, holding the Bulls to 10 points.  

NOTABLES 

  • Caroline Dykes (Flower Mound, Texas) dished out 29 assists.  
  • Schneider, Khoshatefeh, and Andrade served an ace.  

UP NEXT 

South Florida will continue its four-match road stand as they head north to take on the Temple Owls on November 2nd & 3rd.

Head coach Jolene Shepardson enters her fourth season at the helm of her alma mater in 2023. Named head coach on Jan. 8, 2020, Shepardson led the Bulls’ program to its last conference championship and NCAA tournament appearance as a student-athlete in 2002. USF made its last postseason appearance in 2018, posting 20 wins and appearing in the NIVC. USF Volleyball has made seven NCAA Tournament appearances and won 12 conference titles since its inception in 1972. The Bulls play in The Corral (1,000), adjacent to the Yuengling Center on the USF campus.
