USF Softball: USF Softball Defeats Memphis to Complete Sweep

MEMPHIS, Tenn., April 7, 2024 – The University of South Florida softball team (27-15, 7-8 AAC) completed the series sweep over the Memphis Tigers (4-30, 1-14 AAC) on Sunday afternoon with a 9-6 final.

The Bulls started the game as they had in the first two, taking the early lead. With the bases loaded, Alanah Rivera (St. Petersburg) singled to center field to drive in the first run and keep the bases loaded. A Tiger’s error allowed Rian Eigenmann (Millville, N.J.) to score the Bulls’ second run.

South Florida started the third inning with a walk and single. A fielder’s choice from Emma Humplik (Orange, Texas) loaded the bases again for the Bulls. Another error from Memphis allowed South Florida to extend its lead 3-0.

Payton Dixon (Smyrna, Del.) and the Bulls’ defense held the Tigers hitless until the fourth inning.

The Tiger’s fourth error of the game allowed the Bulls’ fourth run to score in the sixth inning. Kathy Garcia-Soto (Tampa) started the sixth inning with a lead-off walk. A two-base error from Memphis put her on third and then a throwing error brought Garcia-Soto home.

South Florida scored five runs in the ninth inning to extend its lead to 9-0. Four runs were scored on two Tiger errors, while the fifth was scored on a groundout from Jocelyn Wilkes (Tampa).

Memphis scored six runs in the seventh inning.

Dixon pitched six scoreless innings. She allowed three hits and struck out three. Julia Apostolakos (Beachwood, N.J.) and Belle Sardja (Gibsonton) pitched in the final inning.

  • The Bulls have won 19 straight matchups against Memphis.
  • Alexa Galligani (White Plains, N.Y.) extends her on-base streak to 14 games.
  • Rivera had her seventh multi-hit performance of the season.
  • Nine Bulls scored a run.
  • Dixon earned her 14th win of the season.

South Florida will head back on the road for an in-state matchup against the No. 10/9 Florida Gators on Wednesday in Gainesville. The first pitch is set for 6 p.m.
