USF SOFTBALL: USF Readies for Midweek Doubleheader Against New Mexico State

The Bulls play their first midweek matchup of the season

TAMPA, FLA.
 March 9, 2021 – The University of South Florida softball team plays a midweek doubleheader against the New Mexico State Aggies on Wednesday. Game one is scheduled for a 3 p.m. first pitch with game two occurring 40 minutes after game one.

Due to virus mitigation measures and the size of the venue, fan attendance at USF Softball Stadium will be via team pass list only. All regular-season home games during the 2021 season will be broadcast on the ESPN+ platform.

USF leads the all-time series against the Aggies, 6-1. They last met on the field at USF Softball Stadium on March 11, 2016, a 5-4 win for the Bulls in eight innings. NM State’s last win came in 2008, a 4-3 decision at a neutral site.

The Bulls are coming off a two-game set against the No. 2 Arizona Wildcats. Arizona took both games, 11-1 and 8-0. USF sits at 3-6 on the season after playing four games against top-5 teams.

Opponent

The Aggies sit at 9-10 on the season, playing all 19 games in the state of Florida. Last weekend at The Spring Games, New Mexico State went 6-0 with wins over Central Michigan, North Dakota, FGCU, Middle Tennessee, South Dakota and Toledo.

On offense, the Aggies are led by redshirt freshman pitcher Matalasi Faapito, who has hit with a .385/.433/.750 slash with four home runs and 10 RBI. Redshirt freshman Hailey Tanori also helps pace New Mexico State, with a .339 batting average and five doubles. In the circle, Faapito has handled the most innings for the Aggies, with a 3.57 ERA in 51 innings pitched.

The American Athletic Conference and ESPN began a new 12-year television rights agreement starting in 2020-21. USF will stream numerous home athletic events to ESPN+ this spring.
