USF SOFTBALL: USF Falls Against No. 2 Arizona

A nine-run fifth inning was the difference maker in Arizona’s victory

TAMPA, FLA. March 6, 2021 – The University of South Florida softball team suffered a 11-1 defeat against No. 2 Arizona on Saturday evening. The Bulls played the Wildcats close until the fifth inning, when Arizona brought nine runs across home plate to force a run-rule victory after five.

Arizona struck first in the game, bringing home a run on a fielder’s choice in the opening frame. The Wildcats scored another run and took a 2-0 lead by capitalizing on mistakes by the USF defense in the top of the second.

Camryn Dolby (Round Hill, Va.) kept Arizona’s offense at bay until the fifth, when the Wildcats scored nine runs on eight hits including three home runs to extend their lead to 11-0.

USF ended the shutout bid in the bottom of the inning. Kyndall Williams (Trenton, Fla.) doubled to right field and was pinch run for by Alexis Johns (Sarasota, Fla.). Johns advanced to third on a single from Tayli Filla (Fort Myers, Fla.) and scored in the next at bat as Megan Pierro (Lutz, Fla.) singled to left. The run wasn’t enough to keep the game alive, however, and Arizona took the 11-1 victory in the first game of the weekend.

Notables

  • Filla made her first start of the season at third base.
  • Pierro has now reached base in her last 10 straight games, dating back to March 4, 2020 against Detroit Mercy.
