USF Softball Powers Past Mississippi State, 4-0

A gem in the circle from Georgina Corrick paired with a strong showing on offense gave USF the victory

TALLAHASSEE, Fla., May 20, 2022 – The University of South Florida softball team (45-14) used a strong showing in all aspects of the game to earn a 4-0 win over Mississippi State (32-24) on Friday evening. The Bulls will now play Florida State (53-5) in the first game of the day tomorrow at 1 p.m.

USF’s offense was driven by a pair of home runs in the sixth inning off the bats of Meghan Sheehan (Forest Hill, Md.) and Josie Foreman (West Palm Beach, Fla.). Alexis Johns (Sarasota, Fla.) manufactured a run in the first inning as well, while Georgina Corrick (Sanford, Fla.) tossed her 34th complete game of the season to earn her 37th win.

Johns started the Bulls off on a high note, singling to lead off the game then stealing second. Her 59th swipe of the season tied her for the 15th most in a single season in NCAA history. Sheehan singled to put runners on the corners, then drew a throw to second as she was caught stealing to allow Johns to score.

Pitchers took control of the game thereafter, with the game remaining 1-0 until the sixth inning. Sheehan Led off the top of the inning with a rope that cleared the wall in right-center for her second home run in the last three games. Three batters later and with a runner on, Foreman crushed a ball to left field that left the park to extend the Bulls’ lead to 4-0.

Corrick continued her dominance in the circle by closing the door, earning her 21st shutout of the season.
