USF SOFTBALL: Corrick Dominates as USF Shuts Out FAU, 6-0

The junior threw 17 strikeouts in a complete-game shutout and hit two home runs

TAMPA, FLA. Feb. 27, 2021 – University of South Florida junior pitcher Georgina Corrick was stellar on both sides of the ball in a 6-0 victory over Florida Atlantic on Saturday evening. The Sanford, Fla., native hit two home runs and tossed a 17-strikeout, complete-game shutout in the circle to improve the Bulls to 2-3 on the season.

Corrick improved to 2-1 this year in the circle. Senior AnaMarie Bruni (Schwenksville, Pa.) hit a triple and scored a run and redshirt junior Bethaney Keen (Bradenton, Fla.) went 2-for-3 with two RBI in the win.

Corrick started the Bulls off strong. She struck out the side in the top of the first, then put USF on the board in the bottom of the inning with a two-run shot to left-center that also scored Brooke Hartman (Port Orange, Fla.).

In the bottom of the second, defensive miscues allowed Kelsey Lay (West Palm Beach, Fla.) to drive home Jordyn Kadlub (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) and then score herself on another error later in the inning to extend USF’s lead to 4-0.

Corrick struck out the side again in the top of the third, then led off the bottom of the inning. In her second at-bat of the game, she took an 0-1 pitch and drove it over the left field wall to push the lead to 5-0.

In the fourth, after Corrick struck out the side for the third time, Bruni led off the bottom half of the inning with a triple to right-center and Keen drove her home with a single to put the Bulls up 6-0.

Corrick continued dealing the rest of the game, allowing a baserunner in the fifth and seventh while striking out another six batters to earn the complete-game victory.

Notables

  • Corrick came one strikeout shy of tying USF’s single-game record of 18, a mark set by Erica Nunn against Temple in 2014 and matched by Corrick against Wisconsin last season. She’s thrown 30 total in her last two starts.
  • Corrick is the first Bull to hit two home runs in a game since Brooke Hartman completed the feat at Memphis on March 30, 2018.
  • Kadlub has a three-game hitting streak.

Quotable

Head coach Ken Eriksen on Georgina Corrick…

“That’s a special player. We know that she’s capable of doing those types of things. She makes it look effortless. She’s a good person to learn from by watching her, just be smooth and trust your athleticism. She did that at the plate and she did that on the mound tonight. I’m real proud of her.”

Georgina Corrick on her home runs…

“I really enjoy hitting. Hitting is a lot of fun. I really want to help my team out whenever I can and if it’s not in the circle, I want it to be in the box. I’ve been working really hard, coming out to the cages and getting my swings in. I think it’s really helped me see the ball a lot better today and get the power I needed to help my team out. I’m just really excited that coach is giving me the chance to swing away a little bit more.”
