USF SOFTBALL: Bulls Open Series with Victory over Tulsa, 3-1

USF has won eight of nine conference games this season

TAMPA, Fla. April 9, 2021 – The University of South Florida softball team opened up its weekend series against the Tulsa Golden Hurricane with a victory, 3-1, on Friday afternoon.

Georgina Corrick (Sanford, Fla.) earned the victory after pitching all seven innings in the win. The junior now sits at 12-4 on the season and has thrown 12 complete games. Alexis Johns (Sarasota, Fla.) went 2-for-3 at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing two bases.

Tulsa scored first, plating a run in the first inning off an error to take a 1-0 lead. The Bulls answered in the third inning. Johns began the inning with a single and later stole second. Three batters later, Bethaney Keen (Bradenton, Fla.) singled to center which drove in Johns.

The score held until the fifth, when USF took the lead when Megan Pierro (Lutz, Fla.) doubled home Natalie Zweig (Tampa, Fla.) to give the Bulls a 2-1 advantage. South Florida added an insurance run in the sixth, as Johns scored on an error to put the Bulls up 3-1.

Corrick earned the victory after she struck out two in the seventh, bringing her total in the game to 12 batters.

Notables

  • Corrick has thrown 10 or more strikeouts in 10 appearances this season. She now has 181 strikeouts in 107.1 innings in the circle.
  • Johns’ two stolen bases brings her total on the season to 11.

Up Next

USF continues the series against the Golden Hurricane on Saturday at 1 p.m.. Due to virus mitigation measures and the size of the venue, fan attendance will be limited to team pass list only at USF Softball Stadium. All games in the series will be broadcast on ESPN+.
