USF Opens Regular Season at Home Against Temple

The Bulls get set for the first of two straight at Corbett Stadium when they host the Owls.

TAMPA (Feb. 5, 2021) – The University of South Florida men’s soccer team finally returns to Corbett Stadium to begin its regular season on Saturday when it hosts Temple. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. and the match can be seen live on ESPN+ and heard live on Bulls Unlimited.

Saturday’s game will mark the first regular-season game competition for the Bulls since their NCAA Tournament first-round match at Louisville on Nov. 21, 2019. 

USF will look for its sixth win in its last 12 season-openers.

– USF begins its 55th season of intercollegiate play on Saturday night when it takes to the pitch to face Temple in the regular season and American Athletic Conference lid lifter for both programs … The Bulls boast a 565-293-99 record all-time and have logged double-digit wins 31 times, including a single-season record 17 (17-4) during the 1996 campaign.

–  USF posted a 10-7-1 record in 2019 and a 3-3 mark in the American Athletic Conference, good enough for third place in the AAC standings.

–  A win against Temple would improve USF’s record in season-opening matches to 38-15-3 … The Bulls are 2-3-1 in their last six season openers and are 5-4-2 in their last 11 lid lifters.

SCOUTING TEMPLE

– The Owls are coming off of an 8-8-2 season in 2019, which included a slow start before the team rebounded mid-season … The Owls ranked fifth in the AAC last season; they earned their first-ever American Athletic Conference tournament win.

– Temple returns the program’s first-ever AAC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, Pierre Cayet, as well as preseason all-conference forward Sean Karani … The Owls return three of their top five point scorers from last season.

THE SERIES AGAINST THE OWLS

– USF and Temple have met just eight times before Saturday’s match with the Bulls leading the all-time series 5-2-1 … USF has dropped two of their last three games against the Owls, after starting the series 4-0-1.

– USF is 3-0 all-time against Temple at Corbett Stadium … Temple defeated USF, 3-1, in its last meeting with the Bulls on Oct. 13, 2019, in Philadelphia.

CORBETT ATTENDANCE POLICY

– Due to virus mitigation measures and the size of the venue, USF will have limited fan attendance via pass list only at Corbett Stadium.

USF Men’s Soccer competed in the school’s first ever intercollegiate athletic contest on Sept. 25, 1965, beating Florida Southern 4-3. USF Soccer concluded the 2019 season with an 11-7-1 overall record, earning an at-large NCAA Tournament bid. Four players earned AAC honors, highlighted by first team selections Avionne Flanagan and Javain Brown. Adrian Billhardt was tabbed a second team selection. In addition, Brown and Salvatore Mazzaferro were named to The AAC All-Rookie Team. Head coach Bob Butehorn returns to lead USF in his fourth season on the sidelines.
