USF MSOC: South Florida Earns Fifth Seed in AAC Tournament

TAMPA, Fla., November 1, 2023  The University of South Florida Men’s Soccer program has earned the fifth seed in the American Athletic Conference (AAC) men’s soccer championship and will travel to Tennessee to face fourth-seeded Memphis on Sunday, Nov. 5.  The start time will be released at a later time.

The tournament features a single-elimination formation with the first round on Sunday, Nov. 5. SMU (12-1-2, 7-0-1 American) will host the semifinals on Nov. 9 and the final on Nov. 12.  All games will be streamed live on ESPN+. The tournament champion will earn the league’s automatic bid to the 2023 NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championship.

In the first-round matchups, No. 3 seed FIU (9-3-4, 5-1-2 American) will host No. 6 seed Florida Atlantic (5-7-3, 3-5 American), while No. 4 seed Memphis (9-4-2, 4-4 American) will host No. 5 seed South Florida (6-8-1, 3-4-1 American). Charlotte (10-3-1, 6-2 American) is the No. 2 seed and earned a first-round bye alongside No. 1 seed SMU.

USF Men’s Soccer competed in the school’s first-ever intercollegiate athletic contest on Sept. 25, 1965, beating Florida Southern 4-3. Since then, the oldest program on campus has built a winning tradition, claiming 14 conference championships and making 22 NCAA Tournament appearances, including 3 trips to the elite eight.
 
The program also has a strong reputation within the professional game and boasts 30 MLS draft picks. Notable alumni include two-time MLS Golden Boot winner Jeff Cunningham, USA 1994 World Cup star Roy Wegerle, and 2013 MLS Cup winner Dom Dwyer. Men’s Soccer has two Alumni in the USF Athletics Hall of Fame: Fergus Hopper and Dan Holcomb, with Jeff Attinella joining as part of the 2023 class.


The Bulls have reached the NCAA Tournament 13 times over the past 22 seasons.
