USF MGolf: Bulls Finish 8th at Valspar Collegiate

Sophomore Run Youprayong leads the way shooting -3;

Bergstrom sets USF records for rounds of par or better


PALM CITY, FLA., MARCH 30, 2022 – The USF men’s golf team finished tied for eighth in a strong 15-team field at the Valspar Collegiate Invitational Tuesday at the Floridian Golf Club in Palm City, Fla.

The Bulls were led by sophomore Run Youprayong (Bangkok, Thailand) whose second round 67 helped propel him to a 3-under total of 210 and a tie for 17th. He recorded three eagles in the tournament, two coming on the par 4, sixth hole.

The Bulls were competing in a field that featured 10 teams ranked No. 33 or higher nationally, including six top 20 teams. No. 10-ranked Pepperdine won the tournament firing a 34-under par total of 818 to finish ahead of No. 26 Florida State (832) and No. 20 Wake Forest (837). No. 32-ranked USF shot rounds of 284, 282 and 281 for a 5-under par total of 847 that finished tied for eighth with No. 5 Texas Tech and ahead of No. 21 Clemson (851) and No. 17 Texas A&M (852) among others. No. 6 Arizona State, No. 33 Ohio State and No. 4 North Carolina finished ahead of the Bulls.

USF junior Albin Bergstrom (Falsterbo, Sweden) entered the tournament ranked No. 7 nationally and finished T22 with a 2-under par total of 211. He sandwiched a second-round 74 with rounds of 68 and 69 on the par 71 course as he set program records for par or better rounds, tying his own program season record with 24 on the year and breaking current PGA tour member Chase Koepka’s USF career mark (79) with his 80th career par or better round.

Junior Ian Peng (Chang Hua, Taiwan) finished T37 with a 2-over par total of 215 and a low round of 70.

Freshman Shubham Jaglan (New Delhi, India) and sophomore Sam Nicholson (Atlantic Beach) both finished T51 with 5-over par scores of 218. Freshman Chase Gullikson (Orlando) played as an individual and finished T80 with a 20-over total of 233.

The Bulls will wrap up the 2022 regular season April 15-16 at the Thunderbird Collegiate at Papago Golf Club in Phoenix, Ariz. USF will once again host the American Athletic Conference Championship at Southern Hills Plantation April 22-24. The Bulls and Bergstrom are the defending team and individual champions and USF has won five AAC Championships since joining the conference in 2013.

• Junior Albin Bergstrom currently has the Bulls’ best-ever career scoring average (70.29), more than a stroke better than Koepka’s previous mark of 71.53.

• Bergstrom’s 69.13 season scoring average is on pace to break his own USF record of 70.00 set in 2018-19, as is his current national ranking of No. 7, which is seven better than Chase Koepka’s USF record of a No. 11 final season national scorer rating. Bergstrom reached as high as the No. 4 ranking in early March.

• Bergstrom is the highest ranked player the American Athletic Conference and second in the state of Florida.

• Bergstrom has 24 par or better rounds on the year and 80 on his career, setting USF season and career marks in both.

• Bergstrom also owns USF career records for scoring average (70.45), tournament low round (63, 2019-20), tournament low round to par (-9, 2019-20), tournament low 36-hole total (133, -11, 2018-19), and is second in wins (3) and low 54-hole total (201, -11, 2018-19).
