USF Men’s Soccer Kicks Off American Athletic Conference Play at FAU on Friday

The Bulls look for their second-straight win and their first in league play against their new conference foe.

 – The University of South Florida men’s soccer team begins its 10th American Athletic Conference season on Friday against a new league foe when the Bulls travel to Boca Raton to face Florida Atlantic. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. 

The Bulls are looking for their second-straight win of the season after an impressive 2-0 victory over Mercer on Sept. 9 in Tampa. In addition, South Florida looks for its first conference-opening win since a 2-1 victory over UConn in 2019.

Friday begins a five-match AAC stretch for South Florida, with its home conference opener coming on Sept. 24 against Temple at Corbett Stadium (7 p.m.).

THE SERIES VS. FLORIDA ATLANTIC

– South Florida and Florida Atlantic meet for the 18th time with the Bulls dominating the all-time series, 12-3-2.

– The two sides last met on Sept. 10, 2018, at Corbett Stadium, with South Florida defeating Florida Atlantic, 4-1.

A LOOK AT THE OWLS

– Florida Atlantic had their first and only win of the season against Stetson on Aug. 31, defeating the Hatters, 2-1 … They currently have a three-match losing streak.

– Former Bull Victor Claudel leads Florida Atlantic in scoring with six points on three goals … Spencer Mallion and Fritz Kleiner lead the team in assists with one each.

LAST TIME OUT

– South Florida faced Mercer and picked up their first win of the season with an impressive 2-0 victory over the Bears, outshooting Mercer, 16-7, including a commanding 9-3 margin in shots on goal.

– Ajmeer Spengler got the scoring going with the Bulls’ first goal of the season … In the second half, South Florida had several chances to put the ball past Mercer goalkeeper Trevor McMullin but it wasn’t until the 82’ when Alex Sannes finally beat the Bears’ netminder off assists from Shion Soga and Josh Gomina to extend the lead to its final score of 2-0.

– Jackson Weyman made three saves on the night and recorded his second shutout of the season.

– Ajmeer Spengler had a match-high of four shots and three shots on goal … Five other players added two shots apiece for the Bulls.

– Following the Florida Atlantic match, South Florida continues their five-match American Athletic Conference stretch with their AAC home opener, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m., against Temple.

USF Men’s Soccer competed in the school’s first ever intercollegiate athletic contest on Sept. 25, 1965, beating Florida Southern 4-3. Since then, the oldest program on campus has built a winning tradition, claiming 14 conference championships and making 21 NCAA Tournament appearances, including 3 trips to the elite eight.

The program also has a strong reputation within the professional game and boasts 29 MLS draft picks. Notable alumni include two-time MLS Golden Boot winner Jeff Cunningham, USA 1994 World Cup star Roy Wegerle, and 2013 MLS Cup winner Dom Dwyer.

The Bulls have advanced to the postseason in 18 of the past 20 years, including 12 NCAA Tournament appearances during that period.

The University of South Florida men’s soccer team was well represented on the AAC postseason All-Conference Team in 2021 with four players earning honors. Highlighting the Bulls’ honorees was the American Athletic Conference Co-Goalkeeper of the Year, Kazuna Takase, along with first-team selection Shion Soga. In addition, Takase was also selected to the All-Conference Second Team along with Salvatore Mazzaferro, and Josh Gomina was named to the AAC All-Rookie Team.
