USF Men’s Soccer Closes the Regular Season on Wednesday at Central Florida in the War on I-4

The Bulls are looking for their third straight win.

TAMPA (Nov. 1, 2022)
 – The University of South Florida men’s soccer team will take the 98-mile trek to Orlando on Wednesday for the final match of the 2022 regular season when they face Central Florida in the War on I-4. Kickoff at the UCF Soccer and Track Complex is at 7 p.m. and the match can be seen live on ESPN+. The Bulls look for their season-best third straight win on Wednesday and are unbeaten in eight of the last 10 matches.

South Florida comes into the contest in a tie for third place with SMU. Each side has 15 points just one point behind the league leaders Tulsa and FIU who have 16 points apiece.

Oscar Resano (4g) and Ajmeer Spengler (2g, 2a) lead the Bulls in scoring with eight points each. Alfred Perez (2g, 1a), Brian Schaefer (2g, 1a), Marcus Victorio (1g, 3a) and Shion Soga (1g, 3a) are all tied for third with five points.

THE SERIES VS. CENTRAL FLORIDA

– South Florida and UCF meet for the 39th time on Wednesday with the Bulls dominating the all-time series record 26-9-3, including an 11-3-3 mark in matches in Orlando.

– The last match against the Knights was a 4-3 win on Oct.27 in Orlando.

A LOOK AT THE KNIGHTS

– The Knights will enter Wednesday’s match with a 6-6 overall record and a 3-5 record in league play.

– Lucca Dourado leads the conference with 11 goals and is second in points scored with 22 … Gino Vivi is a distant second on the team in scoring with nine points (2g, 4a).

LAST TIME OUT

– The Bulls won their second straight match, tying them for third with SMU with 15 points apiece, just one point behind league-leading Tulsa and FIU with 16 points each.

– Alfred Perez got the scoring going in the 67’ when he received a pass from Jefferey “JT” Cooper, popped it off his chest and finished the sequence with a bicycle kick that would put the Bulls on the board.

– Sergio Pineros-Mayorga added the exclamation point on Senior Night by scoring his first career goal in the 83’ with a bending laser to the top corner of the net.

– The outcome of the UCF match will determine USF’s fate going into the AAC tournament … South Florida and SMU are currently tied for third place with 15 points each, one point behind Tulsa and FIU.

USF Men’s Soccer competed in the school’s first ever intercollegiate athletic contest on Sept. 25, 1965, beating Florida Southern 4-3. Since then, the oldest program on campus has built a winning tradition, claiming 14 conference championships and making 21 NCAA Tournament appearances, including 3 trips to the elite eight.

The Bulls have advanced to the postseason in 18 of the past 20 years, including 12 NCAA Tournament appearances during that period.

The University of South Florida men’s soccer team was well represented on the AAC postseason All-Conference Team in 2021 with four players earning honors. Highlighting the Bulls’ honorees was the American Athletic Conference Co-Goalkeeper of the Year, Kazuna Takase, along with first-team selection Shion Soga. In addition, Takase was also selected to the All-Conference Second Team along with Salvatore Mazzaferro, and Josh Gomina was named to the AAC All-Rookie Team.
