USF Men’s Soccer Begins 2022 Regular Season on Aug. 25

The Bulls will play 11 home matches at Corbett Stadium highlighted by 2021 National Runner-up Washington. 

TAMPA (July 6, 2022) – University of South Florida men’s soccer head coach Bob Butehorn announced Wednesday the Bulls’ schedule for the 2022 season that features six opponents that took part in the 2021 College Cup, including national runner-up Washington as well as Charlotte (First Round), FIU (First Round), Mercer (First Round), North Carolina (Second Round) and Tulsa (Third Round).

South Florida’s slate includes three home exhibition matches in addition to eight regular-season contests to be played at Corbett Stadium. USF will also face four of its nine American Athletic Conference foes on its home pitch.

All of South Florida’s home matches will be streamed live on the ESPN+ platform.

“This is the toughest schedule in my time at USF,” said Butehorn. “The players and coaches wouldn’t have it any other way. We’re all excited for the challenge and the upcoming season.”

Highlighting the 2022 schedule will be a meeting with 2021 College Cup Finalist, Washington, on Sept. 6 at Corbett Stadium in Tampa. The Huskies fell to Clemson, 2-0, in the NCAA National Championship match and finished their season with an 18-2-2 record and a 6-1-2 mark in the Pac-12.

Three home preseason exhibition matches will get the Bulls started, beginning with Saint Leo on Aug. 12. The Green and Gold will round out the preseason schedule with the 43rd Annual Mayor’s Cup/Rowdies Cup vs. the University of Tampa on Aug. 16, and Eckerd on Aug. 20.

South Florida will open the regular season with three of its first five matches at home, starting with in-state foe Florida Gulf Coast on Aug. 25. After road matches at North Carolina on Aug. 28 and Marquette on Sept. 2, the Bulls will close out the five-match stretch with home tilts vs. Washington (Sept. 6) and Mercer on Sept. 9.

The next five matches will come against AAC members, including several new additions. The run begins by taking on Florida Atlantic in Boca Raton on Sept. 17. South Florida then plays its conference home opener on Sept. 24 against Temple before back-to-back road matches at Charlotte on Sept. 30 and at UAB on Oct. 5. FAU, Charlotte and UAB are joining The American in men’s soccer in 2022 and will become full members in 2023.

The Bulls will enjoy their longest homestand of the season with three-straight matches in Corbett Stadium starting against conference foe Tulsa on Oct. 9 before taking on Stetson on Oct. 12 and FIU on Oct. 16.

After a trip to Dallas to face AAC foe SMU on Oct. 22, South Florida will take on Memphis in the regular-season home finale on Oct. 28.

South Florida closes out the regular season with a War on I-4 matchup with Central Florida in Orlando on Nov. 2.

The six-team American Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Championship tournament will be held Nov. 6-13 with the first round being played at on-campus sites of the higher seed (Nov. 6) and the semifinals (Nov. 10) and championship (Nov. 13) being staged at the highest remaining seed.

South Florida finished the 2021 campaign with a 6-7-2 record and a 4-5-1 mark in The American. The Bulls were the hottest team in the conference down the stretch, posting a 4-1-1 record in their last six matches and 2-0-1 in their last three outings.

USF Men’s Soccer competed in the school’s first ever intercollegiate athletic contest on Sept. 25, 1965, beating Florida Southern 4-3. Since then, the oldest program on campus has built a winning tradition, claiming 14 conference championships and making 21 NCAA Tournament appearances, including 3 trips to the elite eight.

The Bulls have advanced to the postseason in 18 of the past 20 years, including 12 NCAA Tournament appearances during that period.

The University of South Florida men’s soccer team was well represented on the AAC postseason All-Conference Team in 2021 with four players earning honors. Highlighting the Bulls’ honorees was the American Athletic Conference Co-Goalkeeper of the Year, Kazuna Takase, along with first-team selection Shion Soga. In addition, Takase was also selected to the All-Conference Second Team along with Salvatore Mazzaferro, and Josh Gomina was named to the AAC All-Rookie Team.
