USF Men’s Golf: Bulls sixth in strong field at Seminole Intercollegiate

Gifford leads the Bulls at two-under-par 214 to finish T16.

TAMPA (FEB. 21, 2021) – The USF men’s golf team posted a three-round total of 862 to collectively finish two-under-par, which was good for sixth place at the Seminole Intercollegiate this weekend in Tallahassee.

In a loaded field which contained five Top-25 teams and many others receiving votes in the poll, including No. 1-ranked Oklahoma, the Bulls were one of only six teams to shoot under par in the tournament. USF totaled rounds of 287 (-1) on Friday, 288 (E) on Saturday and 287 (-1) in Sunday’s finale, finishing just one stroke behind NC State in fifth place. The Bulls bested No. 24 North Florida by 13 shots and No. 25 Duke by 17 strokes.

No. 15 Florida State hosted and won the tournament with a team score of 838 (-26).

Sophomore Luke Gifford (Boca Raton) paced the Bulls with rounds of 72, 71 and 71 to tie for 16th in the individual standings at two-under-par. The 2020 PING All-Region selection, who led USF on the course for the first time this season, was a model of consistency over the 54-hole tournament by carding 40 pars – the third most in the field.

USF’s leader in each of the first two tournaments this season, Albin Bergstrom (Falsterbo, Sweden), posted rounds of 70, 69 and 77. The sophomore rose up the leaderboard into seventh place at the conclusion of round two before finishing Sunday in a tie for 21st at even par.

Sam Nicholson (Atlantic Beach) joined his teammates in the top 30 by tying for 26th with a three-round total of one-over-par 217 (69, 74, 74), just one shot behind Bergstrom.

Run Youprayong (Bangkok, Thailand) carded a 70 on Sunday to lead all USF golfers and close his outing with a three-day score of eight-over-par 224. Kyle Flexsenhar (Lake Mary) struggled out of the gate on Friday, but rebounded nicely over the final two days to round out the team scoring with a 227 (81, 74, 72).

The Bulls return to action at the Valspar Invitational in Palm City, March 15-16.
