USF FOOTBALL: Schneider Named a William V. Campbell Trophy Nominee

Academic All-American and Ray Guy Award candidate named to watch list for award recognizing academic, community and on-field achievement

TAMPA, Aug. 27, 2020 – Record-breaking senior punter and 2019 Academic All-American Trent Schneider (Sydney, Australia) has been named to the William V. Campbell Trophy watch list.

The Campbell Trophy is awarded by the National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Football Hall of Fame and presented annually to recognize an individual as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation for his combined academic success, football performance and exemplary leadership. The 12 finalists for the trophy will each receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship as a member of the 2020 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class and will travel to New York City for the 63rd Annual NFF Awards Dinner where their accomplishments will be highlighted in front of one of the most powerful audiences in all of sports. At the event, one member of the class will be declared the winner of the 31st William V. Campbell Trophy and have his postgraduate scholarship increased to $25,000.

A 2019 CoSIDA Academic All-American (just the second in USF program history), Schneider posted a 4.0 grade-point average in earning his bachelor’s degree in communications last December and is pursuing a master’s degree in entrepreneurship and applied technologies. He has been named to the USF Athletics Honor Roll numerous times (2018, 2019 fall and spring and 2020 spring) and was a 2018 and 2019 AAC All-Academic Team selection.

Schneider shattered USF records last year, as he ranked 12th nationally in punting average with a program record of 46.0 yards per punt. His 3,266 punting yards also set a USF record and he broke the single-game punting average record four times on the season, including the now record of 52.8 ypp on five punts in a 27-23 victory over BYU. His 464 punting yards vs. Memphis last year also set the USF game record.

Entering his third season as a Bull, Schneider owns six USF punting records and is on pace to claim at least three career marks. He has started 25 games, punted 145 times and amassed 6,442 yards punting while averaging 44.4 yards per punt – all on pace for USF career records. He also banged a 72-yard punt vs. East Carolina in 2018 to set the mark for the longest punt in USF history and his 74 punts that year set a new season record.

Schneider was earlier named to the Ray Guy Award watch list presented to the nation’s top punter. USF now has Bulls named to four 2020 award watch lists, including senior cornerback KJ Sails (Wuerffel Trophy) and junior kicker Jared Sackett (Groza Award).

USF is slated to open the 2020 campaign on Sept. 12 vs. The Citadel in Raymond James Stadium.
