USF Football: Brown Honored Again By AAC As Superlative Season Continues

Quarterback is one of two players in the nation with 2,200+ passing and 600+ rushing yards on season and one of two with two total offense games ranked in the top 15 nationally;

No. 6 nationally in total offense, quarterback is on pace to challenge USF season records for total offense, passing yards, passing touchdowns and completion percentage

TAMPA, Nov. 6, 2023 – USF Football is witnessing a rare season in program history as redshirt freshman quarterback Byrum Brown (Raleigh, N.C.) has placed himself among the elite signal callers in the nation and is on pace to challenge several program records.

On Monday, Brown was honored by the American Athletic Conference for the fourth time this season, earning Weekly Honor Roll recognition for the third time after his 457 total yards, school-record tying five touchdown passes and third 100-yard rushing game in a 59-50 shoot-out loss at Memphis Saturday. Brown earned conference Offensive Player of the Week honors in Week 4 and has now been named to the Honor Roll in Weeks 2, 5 and 10.

Saturday, Brown completed 31-of-39 passes for 357 yards and five touchdowns, which tied a 21-year-old program record set by Marquel Blackwell in 2002. His 79.5 percent completion percentage ranked as the fifth-best in program history (he now owns the No. 1 and No. 5 marks) as he became just the fourth FBS player since 1996 to throw five touchdown passes, run for 100 yards and complete 75 percent or better of their passes in the same game. He led USF to 583 yards and its most points in a game since 2019.

Brown’s third 100-yard rushing effort of the season moved him to 673 rushing yards on the year, third among FBS quarterbacks, as he joins LSU’s Jayden Daniels as the only players in the nation to have posted 2,200-plus passing yards and 600-plus rushing yards on the season. He needs just 23 yards rushing Saturday to join Quinton Flowers (2015, 2016 & 2017) and Matt Grothe (2007) as just the third USF player to exceed 700 yards rushing and 2,000 yards passing in the same season.

Brown enters Week 11 ranked No. 6 nationally (first in the AAC) in total offense posting 321.7 yards per game and 11th in points responsible for per game (17.1 ppg). His 517 total yards vs. Rice are still the best mark in the nation this season and his 457 at Memphis rank No. 14, making him one of two players in the nation with two marks in the top 15 on the year. With 2,895 total yards on the season, Brown will likely move into the top 10 of season marks this weekend and, with three regular season games remaining and a possible bowl game if the Bulls can record two more wins, is on pace to challenge for a top three season in program history and could approach the program record of 4,342 set by Quinton Flowers in 2016. His 2,222 passing yards are also just shy of a top 10 season entering Saturday and are on pace to eclipse the program record of 2,911 set by Flowers (2017) and Grothe (2008) in the regular season and, with a bowl game, he could post the first 3,000-yard passing season in program history. Meanwhile, his season completion percentage of 63.4 percent is just .3 percent shy of Grothe’s program record of 63.7 set in the 2006 season, and his 17 passing touchdowns are tied for the seventh-best total in program history, eight shy of the record of 25 set by Flowers in 2017.

The Bulls (4-5; 2-3 AAC) will return to Raymond James Stadium on Saturday for a noon kickoff vs. Temple (3-6; 1-4 AAC). The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and can be heard on 102.5 FM and Bulls Unlimited on TuneIn radio.
