USF Extends Win Streak to Eight With Two Victories

Corrick threw her 500th career strikeout while Dolby tossed a complete game on the second day of the USF Tournament

TAMPA, Fla., Feb. 29, 2020 – The University of South Florida softball team extended its winning streak to eight straight with two victories on the second day of the USF Tournament. The Bulls defeated Syracuse, 1-0, Saturday morning then tallied a win against Texas A&M Corpus Christi in the tournament semifinals, 2-1.

Georgina Corrick (Sanford, Fla.) earned her seventh victory of the year in a complete-game shutout against the Orange. Camryn Dolby (Round Hill, Va.) followed up the win with a complete-game of her own, striking out eight in a victory over the Islanders.

USF 1, Syracuse 0
Corrick carried her success Friday into Saturday’s game. While a Syracuse runner reached third base in the first inning, the junior shut the door and got the next two batters out to start her shutout.

A scoreless second inning led to a notable third for the Bulls. Corrick struck out two batters in the top of the inning, reaching 500 strikeouts in her career. She’s the sixth pitcher in USF history to reach the mark.

In the bottom of the third, USF’s offense broke through. AnaMarie Bruni (Schwenksville, Pa.) singled and advanced to second on an error. Brooke Leistl (Valrico, Fla.) advanced her to third and Brooke Hartman (Port Orange, Fla.) drove her home to give the Bulls a 1-0 lead.

Corrick continued to deal afterward. Facing one over the minimum in the fourth, Corrick struck out the side in the fifth and sat the Orange down in order in the sixth. Corrick closed out her complete game shutout victory with her 10th strikeout of the day to give the Bulls the 1-0 victory.

USF 2, Texas A&M Corpus Christi 1
USF challenged the Texas A&M Corpus Christi pitching staff early. In the first inning, Bruni bunted for a single and stole second to put herself in scoring position. A groundout by Meghan Sheehan (Forest Hill, Md.) advanced Bruni to third, and the senior came around to score off a single from Hartman to give USF the early 1-0 lead.

The Islanders evened the score in the fourth, with a single followed by a triple that scored a run for Corpus Christi.

The Bulls wasted no time striking back. Hartman singled to begin the fourth and advanced on a groundout. A walk from Aliyah Carter (Brownsburg, Ill.) put runners on first and second, and Kyndall Williams (Trenton, Fla.) doubled to bring home Hartman and regain the lead.

Dolby retired the side in order in the fifth and only allowed one runner to reach in the sixth, sending USF to the top of the seventh with the 2-1 lead. The Islanders challenged the sophomore in the seventh, putting the go-ahead run on first base, but Dolby tallied her eighth strikeout to push the Bulls to their eighth straight win.

Quotable
Corrick on her 500th strikeout…
“I’m really glad that I’ve gotten the chance to throw enough games to get 500 strikeouts, but also it’s really nice achievement to have a really big number in, too. You never really notice in a game that you’re throwing that many, so it’s really exciting to see that someone is doing the math for me.”

Coach Jessica Moore on Corrick’s 500th strikeout…
“I’m super proud. Georgina has come a long way. She’s developed a lot. She’s learned a lot. She’s become more mature as a pitcher. It’s awesome to get those kinds of milestones. I’m really happy for her.”
