USF Defeats Marquette, 2-1, For its First Win of 2019

Trey Jackson tallies the game winner while Victor Claudel records his first career goal.

TAMPA (Sept. 6, 2019) – Trey Jackson (Ocala, Fla). scored the game-winner, and Victor Claudel (Strasbourg, France) netted his first career goal, as the USF men’s soccer team notched its first win of 2019 with a 2-1 victory over Marquette in its home opener on Friday night. The Bulls improve to 1-1 on the year while the Golden Eagles drop to 1-1-1.

Despite the one goal advantage, USF dominated the match on both ends, outshooting Marquette 26-9 while not giving the Golden Eagles many chances on their offensive end of the pitch.

Claudel tallied the first goal of the year for the Bulls in the 10’ when he took a pass from Henrique Gallina (Atibaia, Brazil) – who served it up from midfield – and beat the Marquette defender, then goalkeeper Jackson Weyman, giving USF a 1-0 edge.

It wouldn’t be until the 79’ that the Golden Eagles tied the game at one-all on a goal by Alex Mirsberger. Jackson, however, didn’t wait long to put the Bulls back on top beating Weyman, from five yards out, in the 82’ off a pass from Jonathan Rosales (Kissimmee, Fla.) for the winner.

Harrison Devenish-Meares (Sydney, Australia) recorded two saves in the victory for the Bulls.

Quotable

“I think that the guys played pretty well, although we were a little unfortunate that we didn’t have a few more goals, but I think in general we created a lot. Maybe the finishing needs to be cleaned up a bit but overall I think it was a pretty good game for us and one we deserved to win.”  – USF head coach Bob Butehorn
