USF Close Out Three-Game Homestand against Wichita State on Tuesday

The Bulls and Shockers get-together for the first of two meetings over three days.

TAMPA (Feb. 21, 2022) – The University of South Florida women’s basketball team closes out its three-game homestand on Tuesday when it butts heads with Wichita State at 7 p.m. at the Yuengling Center (ESPN+). The contest is the first of two against the Shockers over three days with Thursday’s meeting taking place in Wichita, Kan. (7 p.m. ET, ESPN+).

Tuesday’s meeting is also the make-up game from the original contest scheduled for Jan. 9 that was postponed due to health and safety protocols within the Shockers’ program.

Elena Tsineke leads three players in double-digits in the scoring column, netting 14.5 points per game, and is fourth in The American in scoring after her 13-point performance against Cincinnati on Feb. 16. Tsineke is joined by Bethy Mununga (11.1 ppg) and Dulcy Fankam Mendjiadeu (11.1 ppg), while Elisa Pinzan is netting 7.8 points per game. Sydni Harvey is averaging 7.7 points per contest.

Mununga also leads The American and is 12th in the nation, averaging 11.6 rebounds per game, and is tops in the conference and ninth in the nation in total rebounds (289). Pinzan is first in the conference and 20th in the nation in assists per contest dishing out 5.6 per outing, and first in The American in total assists (135) which is good enough for 25th in the nation.

– Mariah McCully is one of two Wichita State players averaging double figures in the scoring column, netting 12.0 points per game, followed closely by Asia Strong, averaging 10.4 points per contest … Jane Asinde leads the Shockers on the boards, grabbing 8.6 rebounds per game.

THE SERIES AGAINST THE SHOCKERS

– Tuesday will mark just the seventh meeting between USF and Wichita State with the Bulls leading the all-time series 4-2, dating back to the 1982-83 season … USF, however, leads the series, 4-1, with both schools as members of The American … Tuesday is only the third time that the Shockers have visited Tampa to face the Bulls.

USF recorded its best season in program history during the 2020-21 campaign, all while navigating the unpredictable COVID-19 landscape. The Bulls posted a 19-4 record and had five players, during the 2020-21 campaign, the Bulls had five players recognized by The American for impressive seasons, including Elisa Pinzan (Most Improved Player, All-Conference Second Team), Maria Alvarez (Co-Sixth Player of the Year), Bethy Mununga (All-Conference First Team), Elena Tsineke (All-Conference First Team), and Sydni Harvey (All-Conference Third Team).

In addition, Harvey was named the American Athletic Conference Tournament Most Outstanding Player and to the All-Tournament Team, while Mununga and Tsineke were also All-Tournament selections.
