USF Can’t Overcome Early Deficit in Loss to No. 16 Oklahoma State A sixth- and seventh-inning push by the Bulls wasn’t enough to come back against the Cowgirls

CLEARWATER, Fla., Feb. 13, 2020 – The University of South Florida softball team lost its St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational opener to No. 16 Oklahoma State on Thursday afternoon, 5-1. The Bulls late comeback attempt fell short after scoring in the sixth and loading the bases in the seventh.

Oklahoma State (4-2) jumped out to an early lead, bringing three runs home in the first inning. The Cowgirls then added two more in the third to take a 5-0 lead heading into the fourth inning.

A double play killed a potential Bulls (0-5) rally in the fourth, but Georgina Corrick (Sanford, Fla.) shut down Oklahoma State as well to keep the deficit at five.

USF got on the board in the top of the sixth. Bethaney Keen (Bradenton, Fla.) singled to get on base and reached third off of a Tayli Filla (Fort Myers, Fla.) double. A wild pitch allowed her to advance the final 60 feet to shrink OSU’s lead to four.

In the seventh, the Bulls opened the inning with singles from Meghan Sheehan (Forest Hill, Md.), AnaMarie Bruni (Schwenksville, Pa.) and Brooke Leistl (Valrico, Fla.) to load the bases and force a pitching change. Carrie Eberle came on and got three consecutive outs to secure OSU’s 5-1 victory.

Quotable
Coach Jessica Moore on Corrick’s effectiveness…
“Georgina did a good job of coming in in relief. She’s got a devastating mix of speeds and I think that’s what gave them a little trouble. They kind of started to guess a little bit. It was good to see Georgina come out and do that for us.”

Notables

  • Leistl tied her career-high with two stolen bases in the game. The last time the redshirt junior swiped two was against Georgia State in 2018.
  • Corrick struck out seven batters in just 3.1 innings for the Bulls.
