TAMPA (Aug. 25, 2022) – After a two-hour and 43-minute weather delay the University of South Florida men’s soccer team finally had the opportunity to kick off its 2022 regular season on Thursday against instate foe Florida Gulf Coast University however had to settle for a scoreless draw following a physical defensive battle.

Both teams combined for 25 fouls and 20 yellow cards while only totaling 17 shots for the 90-minute match.

In a tale of two halves, FGCU controlled the first 45 minutes outshooting the Bulls 6-2, including a 3-0 margin in shots on goal. South Florida came back in the second half and dominated offensively with eight shots while only holding the Eagles to one shot in the final 45.

The Green and Gold had their best opportunities to put the match away in the final 90 seconds with an onslaught on FGCU goalkeeper Wyatt Kistner. The Bulls’ Takeru Moriyama (Fujieda, Japan) fired an offering that sent Kistner diving for a game-saving save in the 89′. Twenty seconds later, Moriyama’s countryman, Shion Soga (Aichi, Japan) sent in a shot that went just wide left of the goal. After back-to-back corner kicks just three seconds apart Oscar Resano (Mexico City, Mexico) wound up and fired a laser that went wide right seconds before the final whistle sounded.

Resano had a match-high three shots on the night while teammate Gabrielle Privitera (Ciudad Ojeda, Venezuela) was right behind with two.

Goalkeeper Jackson Weyman (Evanston, Ill.) had four saves for his first shutout as a Bull and the third of his career, including his time at Maquette.
