USF Baseball: Trio of Bulls selected on final day of MLB Draft

Jack Jasiak, Brad Lord and Carmine Lane were each drafted on Tuesday.

TAMPA (July 20, 2022) – The 2022 Major League Baseball Draft concluded on Tuesday as three additional players from the University of South Florida were selected. Right-handed pitcher Jack Jasiak (Spring Hill) was drafted in the 12th round (361st overall pick) by the Cleveland Guardians, right-handed pitcher Brad Lord (Crawfordville) was selected by the Washington Nationals in the 18th round (531) and third baseman Carmine Lane (Lake Worth) was taken in the 19th round (562) by the Miami Marlins.

A total of four Bulls were selected in this year’s draft with Tuesday’s trio joining right-handed pitcher Orion Kerkering (Venice) who was drafted in the fifth round by the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday. There has been a total of 131 players drafted out of South Florida, including 17 pitchers since head coach Billy Mohl joined the program in 2015.

USF’ four draft picks in 2022 are the most since 2018 in a class that included Shane McClanahan (first round) and David Villar (11th). Both those players are currently playing in the big leagues. McClanahan earned the starting nod on the mound for the American League in Tuesday night’s MLB All-Star Game, and is the first All-Star in USF program history. A total of six former Bulls have played in the big leagues this season.

Jack Jasiak (12th Round, Cleveland Guardians)

In three seasons with the Bulls, included the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign, Jasiak compiled a 9-9 record with a 2.66 ERA and 151 strikeouts over 149.0 IP while limiting opponents to a .206 batting average. He recorded a career strikeout-to-walk ratio of 5.03 by issuing just 30 walks.

Jasiak lowered his ERA each season at USF, posting a 3.09 mark as a true freshman in 2020, a 2.93 ERA in 2021 and a sparkling 1.32 ERA over five starts in 2022 before having his season shut down due to injury. In 25 career starts, Jasiak logged 17 quality starts on the mound (minimum 6.0 IP and 3 ER or fewer).

Jasiak tallied double-digit strikeouts in four career starts and struck out at least seven batters 11 times. He struck out nine batters in his collegiate debut in 2020 and followed that up in his next outing with an 11-strikout performance. Jasiak set an American Athletic Conference tournament record with 12 strikeouts against Tulane in 2021 and matched that number, a career high, with a dozen punchouts against Brown in 2022.

Jasiak was named to the 2021 AAC All-Tournament Team for his record-setting performance which helped propel USF to the conference championship and the program’s 14th NCAA Regional. The right-hander was the Bulls’ starting pitcher in the 2021 NCAA Gainesville Regional where South Florida upset host Florida in the opening round and proceeded to advance to the program’s first-ever NCAA Super Regional.

A unanimous 2022 Preseason All-Conference selection, Jasiak struck out 30 batters, issued just two walks and limited opponents to a .167 batting average in his five starts this year.

Brad Lord (18th Round, Washington Nationals)

A transfer from Santa Fe College, Lord was a member of the Bulls’ starting rotation for two seasons. He posted a 6-12 record with one save, a 5.01 ERA and 123 strikeouts over 124.0 IP. Lord opened the 2022 campaign with a win over eventual Super Regional participant Louisville.

Lord was an integral part of the USF rotation in 2021 that saw the Bulls win the American Athletic Conference tournament title, the NCAA Gainesville Regional and advance to the program’s first-ever NCAA Super Regional.

His best performance of the season came when it mattered most as USF was facing elimination in the AAC Tournament. Lord tossed six shutout innings against Tulane and struck out a season-high eight batters to send the Bulls into the championship game. He was named to the AAC All-Tournament Team for his efforts.

Carmine Lane (19th Round, Miami Marlins)

A two-time AAC All-Conference selection, Lane was the Bulls’ offensive catalyst in each of the last two season, leading the team in batting average, hits, total bases and runs scored in 2021 and 2022. He was named to the AAC Second Team as a redshirt freshman in 2021 and the First Team in 2022. Lane was also tabbed a Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper in 2021.

Lane was the lone Bull to play in all 57 games this season and logged career highs in batting average (.332), hits (78), RBI (54), slugging (.523) and OBP (.390). He led the American Athletic Conference in hits and RBI during the regular season.

Over three seasons at USF, including the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign, Lane batted .309 with 28 doubles, one triple, 22 homers and 105 RBI.
