USF Baseball: Peña named American Baseball Player of the Week

Roberto Peña batted .533 with five extra-base hits last weekend in Wichita.

IRVING, Texas (May 17, 2021) – The University of South Florida’s Roberto Peña (Caracas, Venezuela) has been named the American Athletic Conference Baseball Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday.

Peña hit .533 (8-for-15) over a four-game series split at Wichita State last weekend. The redshirt went 4-for-4 with two doubles, a homer and three RBI in the series opener to kickstart his big weekend. In total, Peña recorded three doubles, two home runs and four RBI against the Shockers. He also drew a pair of walks, stole three bases and scored five runs in the series.

Peña leads the Bulls in homers (10), RBI (33), slugging (.538) and OBP (.388) this season. Five of his 10 home runs have come during conference play this season and he ranks sixth overall in the AAC in total homers.

The Bulls (22-24, 12-12 AAC) conclude the regular season at home this weekend against No. 11 East Carolina (36-11, 18-6 AAC). The four-game series is set to begin with a doubleheader on Thursday, May 20 at 2 p.m. at USF Baseball Stadium.

The Bulls saw continued success in head coach Billy Mohl’s first season in 2018, reaching 36 wins, advancing to the semifinals of the conference tournament for the first time since 2012, and making the program’s latest NCAA Tournament appearance while also achieving a ranking in multiple polls for the final two months of the season.
