USF Baseball: Montes named AAC Baseball Player of the Week

John Montes hit two homers, including a grand slam, to help lift the Bulls to a series win over Memphis.

TAMPA (March 25, 2024) – The University of South Florida’s John Montes (Toa Alto, Puerto Rico) has been named the American Athletic Conference Baseball Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday.

Montes batted .400 (8-for-20) with two walks, a double, two homers, six runs scored and eight RBI over five games last week. Over three games against Memphis, the senior batted .500 (6-for-12) with two home runs, including a grand slam, and eight RBI to help lead South Florida to a series win as conference play began.

Montes homered in back-to-back games against Memphis, the second leaving the ballpark as a grand slam on Saturday in the eighth inning of a 9-5 win for the Bulls.

Montes leads USF this season in batting average (.405), slugging (.619) and doubles (9), while ranking second on the team in RBI (22) and OBP (.485), and third in home runs (3). He ranks second in the AAC in doubles, third in OBP and third in batting average.

Montes and the Bulls will embark on a five-game road swing beginning on Tuesday, March 26 at Bethune-Cookman. Following that game, South Florida will travel to Charlotte for a three-game conference series against the 49ers on March 28-30. USF will then travel to Stetson on Tuesday, April 2 before returning home to Tampa for a three-game set against Wichita State beginning on Friday, April 5.

The USF Baseball program played its first season in 1966 and is entering its 59th season in 2024 under head coach Billy Mohl (seventh season).
