USF Baseball: Lane, Sullivan named to American All-Conference Team

Carmine Lane and Collin Sullivan each earn All-AAC honors for the first time in their respective careers.

IRVING, Texas (May 24, 2021) – A pair of University of South Florida baseball players have been named to the 2021 American All-Conference Team, the league announced on MondayCarmine Lane (Lake Placid) and Collin Sullivan (Randolph, Mass.) were each named All-AAC Second Team, earning All-Conference recognition for the first time in their respective careers.  

“This is a well deserved honor for both guys and we are all proud of them,” said head coach Billy Mohl. “Carmine has improved tremendously from the shortened 2020 season, and is a key piece to our success currently and moving forward. Collin has had an incredible career here at USF and he has left his mark on this program.”

Lane batted .305 (36-for-118) with 16 extra-base hits over 28 conference games this season. The redshirt freshman recorded 10 doubles, six homers, 20 RBI and scored 18 runs in league play. Overall this season, Lane leads USF and has set career highs in batting average (.328), hits (66), doubles, (13), RBI (35) and runs (35).

Sullivan ranked third in the AAC this season in ERA (2.36) and fourth in strikeouts (48) over seven starts against conference opponents. The redshirt senior limited opposing hitters to a .238 batting average over 42.0 IP. Sullivan tossed a seven inning complete game shutout at Houston, and logged a season-best 13 strikeouts in a start at Memphis.

The right-hander has matched his career low with a 3.86 ERA over 13 total appearances (12 starts) in 2021. Sullivan has turned in six quality starts this year and struck out 75 batters over 65.1 IP while issuing just 11 walks. His 6.82 strikeout-to-walk ratio ranks 26th in the country this season.  

Sullivan’s stellar senior season helped contribute to USF leading the AAC in ERA (3.23), WHIP (1.23), batting average against (.220) and hits allowed/9-innings (7.34).

Sullivan’s 260 career strikeouts rank eighth all-time in program history.

The USF Bulls (24-26, 14-14 AAC) open play in the conference tournament on Tuesday in Clearwater at BayCare Ballpark. USF will oppose Wichita State (30-21, 18-13 AAC) in the opening round of the tournament. That game is slated to start 47 minutes after the conclusion of the 4 p.m. ballgame. The Bulls and Shockers split a four-game series in the regular season two weeks ago in Wichita.

The Bulls have won 1,628 games entering the 2021 season and made 13 NCAA Tournament appearances, including three since 2015. The Bulls have won four conference tournament titles (3 Sun Belt and 1 Metro) and had 126 all-conference selections. USF baseball players have been recognized with All-America honors 12 times, most recently with third baseman David Villar in 2018. The Bulls saw continued success in head coach Billy Mohl’s first season in 2018, reaching 36 wins, advancing to the semifinals of the conference tournament for the first time since 2012, and making the program’s latest NCAA Tournament appearance while also achieving a ranking in multiple polls for the final two months of the season.
